Help me decide on getting a Lightning instead of a Camaro
COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS HAD BOTH WITHIN THE PAST 6 MONTHS I FEEL I CAN OFFER YOU A TRUE PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT I LIKE ABOUT ONE OVER THE OTHER .
CAMARO
1) 4 PASSENGER CAR ONLY 1 MORE THAN THE L BUT I THINK THE L IS MORE COMFORTABLE FOR EVERYONE.
2)FUEL ECONOMY IS DEFFINATELY IN THE HANDS OF THE CAMARO.
3) INSURANCE: IN MOST STATES THEY ARE PRETTY SIMILAR.
4)RAW POWER FOR NATURALLY ASPIRATED MOTOR FOR THE PRICE IS UN HEARD OF.
5) RELIABILITY WAS KEY HERE. THIS VEHICLE IS USUALLY PRETTY DAMN RELIABLE.
LIGHTNING
1) WHATS NOT TO LIKE SPORTS CAR, TRUCK, AND DRAGSTER ALL IN ONE WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR.
2) IF YOU LIKE LAYING BACK IN YOUR SEAT. THE L CAN ACCOMODATE YOU THERE AS LONG AS YOUR NOT TOO TALL. AS THAT WOULD GO FOR JUST ABOUT ANY VEHICLE.
3) THE LIGHTNING HAS A BETTER RIDE THAN THE CAMARO. AND WITH THE RIGHT MODS CAN HANDLE JUST AS WELL.
4) YOU CAN MAKE THIS TRUCK FASTER AND BETTER LOOKING FOR FAR LESS MONEY.
5) RELIABILITY HERE DEPENDS ON YOU. BECAUSE ONCE YOU START MODDING YOU RISK RELIABILTY SO BE SMART HERE.
TO SUM IT UP IF YOU WANT A TRUCK THAT LOOKS COOL IS FASTER MOD FOR MOD AND HANDLE WELL TOO THIS IS RIDE FOR YOU BECAUSE OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT THE CAMARO CAN DO 160 MPH.THE LIGHTNING I THINK IS A FAR BETTER BUY FOR THE MONEY.
I MUST TELL YOU I AM THE BIGGEST GENERAL MOTORS FAN THERE IS BUT IF THERE IS ANYTHING FORD DID RIGHT IT IS THE LIGHTNING. THIS WILL BE THE ONLY FORD I'LL EVER OWN AND I WILL NEVER REGRET IT.
IF YOU HAVE ANY ?'S EMAIL ME @ JMILETIJR@AOL.COM

here's a question - how many gallons does the tank hold, and how many miles can you get between fill-ups when driving in town? since I'm a big fbody fan I guess I took for granted that you can have 320hp and still get 28mpg
VALLA
THE L HOLDS 24.5 GALLONS APPROX. AND WILL GET MAYBE 250-300 MILES TO THE TANK DEPENDING ON HOW YOU DRIVE IN THE CITY. BUT ON THE HIGHWAY IT WILL GET OVER 350 TO THE TANK.
PLUS MODDS COME INTO PLAY HEAR TOO. SOME MODS YOU LOSE ECONOMY SOME YOU GAIN.

thanks for the info.. just need to find the right lightning for sale in texas somewhere in the next few months
I am also worried about reading all this stuff about blown motors. I am not going to mod this thing into a drag monster, the only mods I have in mind are an exhaust, chip, and filter, and the occasional weekend streetlight to streetlight race, maybe a 1/4 mile run a few times a year

Dude, get a Lightning. Looks way better. It is way cooler. You can say I beat you with a truck! And despite what the magazines say that test drive a Lightning with 50 miles and don't know how to drive, the Lightning is faster than a z28 and about the same as a SS. I have seen stock for stock an SS get walked all over by a 99 L at the track. (I was driving the L). I can probably post you a pic if I can find it. Get the L. Its a way cooler vehicle all around.
Hey Valhalla1,
I've never owned an F-body, but my friend in college had a Firebird (88-89 vintage), and it was a lot of fun. It wasn't very fast (had a 6 cylinder), but had a great stereo in it. As far as the L goes, it's been the most fun vehicle (with four wheels) that I've owned. It gets more attention than all my other vehicles, and is a blast to drive. I've done 7 hour drives in it, and it's seats are better than on my Tundra. Definitely one of the best buys out there. I just like the feeling of sitting higher than most of the traffic around me, and I just feel more comfortable in a tall vehicle (even though I'm just 5' 8").
So you're out in West Texas? I went to college/med school out at Texas Tech in Lubbock. When you said 'podunk town', I thought of all those itty bitty towns around Lubbock (Muleshoe, Idalou, Post, Shallowater, etc).
I vote for the Lightning, but like the others said, try them both out to find what suits you best.

Since you are asking us to decide for you...
Buy a used Volkswagon beetle convertible (not the new beetle, the old beetle). There are so many reasons why it's better, I won't bother listing any of them.

VAL-
My brother drove my Lightning for the first time last weekend. He used to race a Datsun 510 in SCCA and has owned some quick cars. We took off from the house and headed for an open stretch of roadway. As we were leaving a residential area, he comments "it kind of feels like every other Ford truck I've driven". I responded that he should quit driving like a grandma and step on the friggin gas pedal. He did just that, and immediately started laughing hysterically while exclaiming "HOLY S&%#!, This thing is fast". His grin was ear to ear and it never left his face the entire drive.
From what I have gathered on this board that is a relatively common experience. I know mine still makes me smile every time I go WOT. It has been a very reliable truck. And Ford stepped up to the plate and recalled their intercoolers. No regrets here.

I will have to go along with all of the other reasons listed and will add one more.
The people on the Lightning Forum are the best. Very helpful with great senses of humor. They make just about anyone, with at least half a brain, feel right at home. They are generous and sincere.
BTW, once you get the L, I know you will, you will become addicted to this forum and the wonderful people here. So relax, enjoy your new L.
