Collectability?

If Ford keeps putting the super charged 5.4 in any other truck but the Lightning why should we all pay a premium
for thease trucks, they should make it esclusive to the lightning
if not our resales will plummet like a rock, why have this SVT
division when they are now putting our motors in Harley rigs
no offense but I paid for the exclusivity of the truck for its components
I like all ford trucks but the should keep them brand seperate
with Thease so called exclusive motors!!! Whats nexy an LX150
like the old mustang LX,GT series!

Amen Brother!!!!

I wasn't aware that Ford was putting the L engine (in all it's glory) into a Harley F-150, but if what you say is true. . .that sucks.

If they wanna put that engine in something (AND I HOPE SOMEONE AT FORD READS THIS). . . . . .

PUT IT IN A FREAKIN' MUSTANG FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!

Later,

The only way these trucks would be collectible is if they have a BIG following and if you keep it absolutely BONE stock. The BIG dollars only go to 100% original, low mileage cars, most of which are 30 years old or more.

in a "Bill Lumbergh voice"... Im gonna have to go ahead and disagreeeee withya there Silver_2000_!. mmmkay.

I had a 1996 cobra vert, Red with black top and interior. I purchased the car in 1999 with 17,000 miles for 18k, and kept it aprox 18months and sold it with 27,000 miles for 19k.

SVT vehicles in good shape will bring good money, becouse they are limited. If they were not exclusive, I would not have been able to "make" money on a car I drove for 18 months!

I would be willing to bet, unless Ford screws the exlusivity of these vehicles, that in a year or so, Ill sale my truck for a profit. This is assuming I sale my truck at all

My cousins own the Gullo Family dealerships in Conroe, one of which is a FORD dealership, and they are SVT certified.

There are some differences between "bringing good money" on resale and being a collectible. Being exclusive is a good start to being collectible, but at current rate of manufacture, L's exclusivity is not a given. Even if Ford stops making L next year, there should be tons of Ls on the road.

And Ls don't really have a defining theme or a popular culture tribute, in terms of movies or TV series made primarily featuring the L. If anything, L is like "best kept secret" in performance vehicles. A shorter way of saying "best kept secret" is "unknown" or "ignored."

So basically, 30 years down the road, when L comes on the auction block, most people will say, "Huh? What's a truck doing here" rather than, "Oh yeah, I had one of those x years back" or "Oh yeah, I saw that car in that cool movie" etc. (And it's appearance in the Fast and Furious is unlikely to leave a lasting impression. )

This is not to say a bone stock mint condition L will not bring a healthy amount of money, but as an investment, it'd be a lousy choice.

They won't be collectible in any of our life times. Take a look at the most exclusive SVT sold, the Cobra "R". It is possible to buy one of each of the last 3 years (93,95, & 00) with little or no miles for less than what they sold for new. Autoweek currently has an 00 with 50 miles never titled for $48k. It has been for sale for several months.

They made too many L's for them to be short term collectables (30 years or less). 50 years might start to see some decent sales numbers. Take the $30k (+/-) that you paid for you r L and invest it in simple and safe Bonds or T-bills and you would see a better return.

Bottom line is: Drive your trucks and enjoy them!

Collectability?

I agree with most of the posts, except for buying this truck to ONLY
just to drive, and enjoy, I bought it also for its character and mystic as
being the baddest truck on the planet with the benefit of being
produced in low numbers by a FACTORY high performance team.
Thinking that any of my features on my truck would appear
on an updated Lightning or maybe a Cobra, is fine, but to pass what makes a
Gen 2 Lightning what it is, to other trucks in there line up is
undermining the reason and character of thease trucks!
Most people who bought this truck could probably bought something else
more expensive or close to the price of a new L , but because of the character
of this truck With the supercharger and outrageous power
we bought one! I would have never bought a pickup other than for
work till I seen the Gen2 It sold me on the package of
Enormous factory power

Great looks factory
Limited production from the factory
and it is all in a pickup!!!!!!
Put a harley motor in the Harley or something other than our 5.4 s/c

I look at it this way.

I expected to have the baddest truck on the road for a year.
It's been almost three with no contender is sight. I've gotten my money's worth already. They just don't make collectable vehicles anymore, IMHO.

Save it, drive it or customize it. Doesn't really matter. Just enjoy it.

You said it brother!

The most collectable year of all the Gen2's is the 99 anyway! The first year of the baddest truck to hit the face of this plant, and the first truck ever of the cover of car and driver magazine. The worlds fastest top speed truck ever produced. This truck changed the way people look at pickup trucks and its going to be collectable some day, but until then. I'm going to have as much fun with it as I possible can!

P.S. the cobra R is a N/A 385hp/385trq 5.4 motor with 4valve heads, 6 speed tremec tranny, independent rear suspension and there was 300 made for customer sale and another 300 made for strictly road racing people.

I agree with TampaSVT,

Do what you want, but I really don't think that the kind folks at SVT intended for these trucks to sit on auction stages
or to be trailered into car shows.

I say . . .drive 'em hard, keep 'em real clean & maintained like crazy, and have FUN.

BTW. . .I have a White '99 and I've already been offered thousands more than I paid for it simply because it's the 1st year of the Gen 2's, and it's the rarest color. I know others with similar stories that have the red and black ones, too. These trucks are bound to be collector desireable, maybe sooner than we all think.

But I didn't buy it to sell it. . .I bought it because I LOVE to drive.

Guys that bought the ZR1 Vette really took a bath. King of the hill. Ya right. Dollar for dollar the L is still a great value. Bob.
