Calling Factory_Tech or any Auto trans guys
I have a 93 Taurus that was going to be my winter ride but the tranny ended up going south on me. I have talked to some local tranny shops around here and they are all looking for $1400-1700 to rebuild the tranny. The car when it was running was only worth about 2K. It has 112,000 miles on it, and the motor was changed out at 60K. What happens is the car runs fine until it warms up, then it starts slipping and gets worse the longer the car is running. If I come to a complete stop, then hit the gas the car acts like it is in neutral. Once I get it to go it runs fine. So if I get on the high way I can drive for an hour with out a problem as long as I don' t come to a stop. Would changing the fluid and filter help any? I don't want to put anymore then $500 into this car as I only need it for a few more months.
Thanks for any help

I'm no trans guy, but my friend sitting here works on diesal truck tansmissions everyday. He says that it does sound like some of your gears might be stripped, but he'd have to take a look at it. My reccomendation to you, get a friend like my mechanic over here, he does all my work, and even some work for people i know for only a pack of beer and food. I think everyone should be friends with at least one mechanic, i'm sick of hearing about people being ripped off, i mean, all that car is is a winter beater car, not even worth it to fix, yet if you give it to a junk yard, they sell the parts for more then the car is worth, its sickening, 1200-1500 to rebuild a tranny that must be ten years old with that many miles on it.
Just one question though, if you really do need the tranny rebuilt,,, keep this in mind, the 3.8 engine in that car from around 92-94 has major head gasket problems around the 50-60 K mile marker, odds are that engine doesn't have long to live.

FactoryTech -while we gotcha, I have a question as well. The tranny in my 01 is "sliding" into 2nd gear!
Instead of going to the dealer(I know they're gonna void my warranty), could I just have new clutch packs installed? I was looking at the raybestos blue plates. Are there other components I need to go in with these?
I only have 4,000 miles on the Lightning. Id really like to have you do the work, but Im in Texas!
