Most L's do. My 99 did and my 01 did it new with under 100 miles.

Mine does too, I think they run them richer to protect the motor from leaning out

Have him remove the intake boot where it clamps to the throttle body. Expect to see oil in the t/b, boot, and plenum behind the th/ body--it may even be 'draining' out of the th/body. I think this unwanted oil is the cause of much of the 'smoke' we see on start-up. Don't think it hurts anything but it may dilute the air/fuel charge?

Got a 99' with about 19000 miles. Had about 20 epidodes of blue, oily smelling exhaust smoke on cold start-up in cool/cold weather in a 28 month period. These are the ones I saw.

No big deal. I doubt if it hurts anything. In fact, I have not seen it for quite a while.

Hey guys, took the L in for the i/c fix and told them I was getting some smoke on start up. No problem, they replaced my valve seals without batting an eye! That was very cool because when they pulled the heads they found head gasket leaks from #2 & #4 cyl. toward they outside of the motor! So if you have a respectable dealer you may want to run that one by him.

Jackman,

How many miles were on your L when this took place?

My L has had a bad smoking problem on startup since day one and Ford has authorized a replacement engine for it but I am aprehensive. My start up smoke is very bad if the truck idles at all before shut down and is pretty much a clear case of leaking / missing valve seals. Upon inspection of my spark plugs at 2000 miles 3 cylinders had oil foulded plugs and oil consumtion is around a quart per 600 miles now. I'll try to post a pic later of old "Smokey" doing her thing during a recent startup after a 3 minute idle and 2 hour cool down, it isn't pretty.
