Fule starvation

I need some help. First my truck and mods
2001 lightning
psp 4 way switch
jdm filter
2200 miles

The first time I thought it was bad gass but it happend again so. I am going to ask

Both times the truck has had less than 1/4 tank of gas but was still well over the 1/8th mark. The problem went away after I added fule the first time. Now for the problem

After finding a empty industrial area Me and a friend were messing around on wide clear streets. After 1 or 2 wide open runs up to around 100 on the 3rd run the truck would basicly fall flat on its face when at WOT and then would continue to do it at part thotle till Pulled over, The last time when I got to the side of the road the truck died. Both times the truck started right up. The first time I thought it was bad gas so went to the gas station and added 10 bucks worth of 91 and the car seemed to run fine. All we have is 91 in southern california or at least at most gas stations.

I am wondering if at under 1/4 tank and hard acceleration it is starving the fule pump ? I have read this a few times but thought it was with less than 1/8th tank ? And is this how the truck would act with fuel starvation ? What else could it be ?

Thanks for the help. I have not gotten on it hard again now that I added gas but it drove fine all the way home. It also is smooth at idle and under acceleration SO I don;t think the engine is hurt.

Thanks agian

I was told it can be very unhealthy for the fuel pump pickup when not having a quarter tank of gas i the truck under hard acceleration. I think the pickup tubes are close to the middle of the tank and hard acceleration can push the gas in the tank to back and cause fuel stravation. Ask the tuners.

I drag race at my track with a 1/4 full tank(to keep the weight down) as do most everybody that races Ls. I even run it down to the 1/8 th level at the strip and never had fuel starvation or eng. troubles. You may have experinced boost dump which would make the L sluggish until normal levels returned. Our Ls run lousy when the ECU dumps the boost. You can disconnect the boost dump solenoid and prevent this from happening. Mine has been disconnected for 15,000 miles with no concerns.

The only other thing that might be wrong(that I can think of) is a dirty or clogged fuel filter--should be ok until 15,000 miles though.

If you don't have the boost bypass, it could also possibly be the boost shut-off solenoid.

OK, the only other thing that comes to mind is the brand of gas--in California. Mike Troyer(Superchips dist.--knows his stuff and has an 01 L) says to buy only Chevron on the west coast. It has the highest energy content out there and may sometimes have even higher octane than the pump says. Legally, it can't have less.

But, I really think it's something else--maybe someone else will have an idea?

Still say it is not healthy to do hard acceleration runs in these trucks with 1/8 tank of fuel. If you did someway have a piece f trash in the tank it could be sucked into the pickup screen. Furhter, what no one will tell you is what is 1/8 reading on my fuel guage vs your fuel guage could be vary 2 to 3 gallons in each truck. So I would play on the safe side and always 1/4 tank of fuel. These guages we have on these trucks are not precise.

As LIghtninrod says it could be something else causing your problem. I am just saying what I believe is a safe mode of operation.

Talking

I actually stalled before mid track this past season as a result of running with 1/8th or less tank of gas but was able to restart and make the 9-10 miles to get more non racing gas.Two days later i dropped the tank and everything looked perfectly clean and the clamps that were defective on some of the 99 fuel pumps were like new on my 00. This proves that you should not run with your low fuel light on...well at least not to many runs lol.

Pull your chip and clean the contacts....make sure it is on straight...watch out for the lip on the ECU bracket..you should bend the braket so it doesn't infringe on the chip..

Make sure you have the correct plug, unplugged for the booost dump...

So far I have only used union 76 91 oct gas in the truck. I will pull the chip and reclean the contacts but I dont think that is the problem. When the truck is above 1/4 tank of gas it has never done the stuttering thing. I also am fairly sure I pulled the correct boost dump plug. It has been out about 800 miles now and no SES light.

I also did wrap 2 strands of electrical tape all the way around computer to secure the chip in and it looks like it is in correct. Also the anti theft part works correct. But I will still clean the contacts and run the truck till it gets low on fuel again I did fill it up so it will be a few days .

Keep the Ideas coming and thanks for all the help
