Question weight..?

Was thinking a little bit.... and wanted to no what weight would be best for our truck's in the winter, also in the summer where most of the driveing will happen... i have been using Mobil 1 all the time in bloth the L and in my Ranger. Im using 15-50 in my Ranger i was guna use thinner like 5-30 in the winter, but my bud said to stick with the 15-50 since it "Ranger" has close to 100K on it.So any InFo would be sweet..... Thanx

Dave:

Ford says "5W20" for my 01 L--not sure about the 99s, but I think they take 5W30. Unless your L has a lot of miles on it, I surely wouldn't run 15W50, especially in the cold temps you get. Pour that Mobil 1 5W30 in there and you have a quick-startin', healthy L.

Btw, you don't know what 'hot' temps are until you've driven in middle Ga. in the summer--I run Royal Purple's #11 Racing synthetic oil(5W20) all year round including 1/4 mile WOT passes.

I agree with Dan

For the first 10,000 miles use regular 5W-30 if you have a 99 or 2000 use regular 5W-20 if you have a 2001 or 2002

The once you reach 10,000 miles get some Mobil One 5W-30 in your truck

Get a Motorcraft FL-820S filter, and make sure you pre fill the filter as much as possible

I have read several posts recommending using regular 5-20w oil for the first few thousand miles, why?

Why shouldn't I put synthetic in right away?

Thanks for the help!!

I agree with what they said also, but some of the L tuners have said to run 10-30 in the ones that make the rattle sound after an oil change for a few days/weeks. I will try it next change to see if it works, if not, back to 5W30. 5W20 is too thin of an oil in any climate based on what the tuners and an engine builer I have talked to. 5W20 is purely for Ford's CAFE mileage ratings.
