Optima Batteries - Which to Choose?

I have used Optima Red top batteries for years now and install them in every vehicle. However, these batteries can be easily destroyed if discharged.

I seen on their site they offer the yellow top deep cycle battery and it seems like it can take more punishment and abuse. For instance an L with an Electric fan kit, sound system, various other electronic gadgets. It carries a price tag of around $180

Anyone use the Yellow Optimas, if so How do you like em?

www.optimabatteries.com

Read the specs on both at their site.

Anthony

Cool

HI!... I've been running a OPTIMA "yellow" top deep cycle battery for about 6-7 months now and I love it. It really shines when at the dragstrip. When I had the factory battery, I would kill it every time at the dragstrip when running my twin 16" electric fans. Now with the OPTIMA , it never dies. The "yellow" top can be totally discharged something like 330 times and still except a full charge. Here's a pic of mine in my "HPP" battery relocation kit.

Thumbs up I agree

Neil knows what he is talking about. Although it's not in my L, I have a yellow top in my 96 Ranger cuz of my stereo (pushing 5 10's). Anyone with a stereo or hydraulics or anything else that puts a huge draw on your battery will tell you yellow top Optima's are the best around. I believe they only make yellow, red, and blue top Optima's with yellow being the most durable (read>>>full recharges) and blue being the least. The other great thing is that you can mount them in any position (great for that battery relocation) even upside down!!!!!! The yellow tops have a ***** load of CCA, even after sitting for days with weather in the teens my Ranger fires right up

I would recommend the battery to anyone......only bad things is it costs about $170 equal to about 3 BXT-650's

Neal -

Just where is that battery at. I have been wanting to relocate mine to underneath the bed. Also, what is an "HPP" relocation kit?

Thanks for the info.

HI!... NEEDFOURSPEED : "HPP" stands for HOLESHOT PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS and those kits plus many others specifucally for these F-150's will be available in FEB. That kit is mounted to the frame rail under the bed on the passenger side. Give MIKE TROYER a call about them.

P.S : My kit also came with a master battery shut off switch in a water resistant case.

You guys might want to check out the SVR 80. It is a deep cycle battery like the yellow top so you dont have to worry about discharging it and it is also sealed so you dont have to worry about corrosion or odd ball mounting locations. It also carries more than enough CCAs to crank your L's engine. They are roughly the same price as the yellow top but hold a lot more juice. They also weigh a LOT.

Neil, Where did you put your remote battery disconnect?
Does it have to be visable from the outside of the truck or what to meet NHRA?

Thanks

Steve

I've used the yellow top for a while now and I also love it. I only did this because i have a habit of leaving my lights on every now and then, also because of my stereo... A normal battery would last about 5 minutes with the engine not running.. The yellow top could go a couple hours, and still be able to be recharged fully.

I believe the yellow top battery also comes with a warranty, whereas the red top does not...

Cool

HI!... SSTOCK : I mounted mine under the hood right on the passenger's side where the factory windsheild washer tank should be. Right on the inner fender well. I used the "HPP" washer tank relocation bottle to make room for it and my future "HPP" "ICE BOX" supercharger intercooler cooler. There are two different versions of the "HPP" battery relocation kit". The "STREET" version that mounts the master battery shut off switch under the hood and a 'STRIP" version that mounts the switch at the back of the truck near the bumper. Let me just say that these kits are still in progress and won't be available untill the end of FEB. So don't go bugging MIKE TROYER about them yet.!!!!!!!!

I always thought the blue tops where the better of the batteries. Isnt that what they use in boats? I may be wrong.

HI!... I was told that the blue top and yellow top battery's are about the same but the yellow tops are designed to be quick charged by a automotive application, alternator where the blue tops are designed to be charged very slowly by like a deep cycle slow charger.
