Thnaks for the help! (Sorry kind of long)
I justed wanted to say thanks to everyone that responded to me questions. Wife and I went to pick up the Lightning yesterday. It came in 5 months sooner than they said it would. We ordered the end of October, because they only had 9 slots to order this year and would be gone by November.
Owner and salesman said the truck would not be in until April or May at the earliest, but need to get our order placed before someone else came in to get it. We figured this would give us time to sell our 2000 Xterra and save a little for the downpayment. Well the truck arrived and we said fine, but had not sold the Xterra yet, they said no problem. Bring it up and they would give a fair deal on the trade in.
Original price on the Xterra was $28,000 (loaded, leather, etc) so I was selling for $23,000 and had a few calls, but figured if I got $20,000 for it, I was happy. I would not have to pay the 6.5% tax on the trade in amount. They said $20,000 should be fine.
When we arrived, the truck was not finished being prep'd and they said there was a problem with the paint. When I looked at the truck (after waiting 1 hour) on the step of the bed (passenger side) the paint was peeling and bumpy. They painted over dust and a bug! I was going to use this as a bargaining on my trade in.
I was not happy that they would need the truck for a day or 2, but could live with it. The offered $17,500 for the Xterra and would not budge. My wife and I could not believe the offer, since 5 others dealers within 50 miles had a 2000 Xterra for 24-26000 without leather and other items. No way was I going to give them a 7-10,000 profit!
Salesman said it was not their fault, they ordered the truck in good faith, gave the X-plan, and continued with not their fault. Well I would not have ordered if I would have been told the possibility of the truck coming in so soon. They even said SVT would not begin to build until February. They called and verified, which I don't believe. Well we walked out and will now reconsider buying a Ford.
Sorry for the long note, but again, thanks for the info, I still love the Lightning and hope everyone has a great holiday season.

Sarge:
There are plenty of other dealers out there.
Suggestion:
Try to get the negotitions done at the time you order the new L, if you can.
They've got you by the cajones(sp?) once the new L arrives if you don't have the trade-in stuff in writing.
Just my .02
Good luck to you.

Try to sell the X-terra yourself, most times you can get more money for your used car/truck than trading one in.
Gives you more bargaining power when you buy a new vehicle if you don't have to trade something.
Go to the other dealers and order you an L and wait until March /April to get it. They know how many L's that they are allotted to sell, you can pick your build date for the L from how many L's they are getting.
Good luck, you can't go wrong owning a L. Almost all dealers are the same when trading something in, not just FORD.
