Well, according to your theory, this shouldn't happen to your dad's Mercedes.

you know how many people with 92 Fords can say they went 90 K miles before an alternator job?

alot.
Yeah but his car is a LEMON. electrical nightmare!

My step moms CLK hasn't had one problem on it. He's had a few mercededs over the years and never had anything wrong like this car. Nothing but trouble. LEMON

I don't think anybody is really whining. But if anybody is, I believe you have a right to whine when you pay $30k for a vehicle. I expect my brand new $30k stock vehicle to purr like a kitten and not make all kinds of obscene engine noises.

All 'high performance' and 'mod' issues aside, if the 5.4 has these issues that a LOT of us are seeing, why hasn't it been reworked in the past few years? If Ford is shipping motors and fixing them, they know there's a problem.

Not intending to downgrade anyones pain here, however, actual ENGINE FAILURES have been few. Ford is replacing many engines due to the owners determination to rid himself/herself of the noise. Period.

Manufacturers have done this for years. In the early 90's, Ford was replacing 302's in the Crown Vics due to piston noise. They replaced alot of them. I know this because I bought one of those very low mileage engines........ and it ran forever (is probably still running). Owners of Crown Vics/Marquis/Lincolns want silence....... so they got it.

You can hardly get GM, Toyota, or DCX to replace your engine just due to cold start knock. They just say it's normal and a characteristic of that engine. Just like they say using 1qt of oil per 1000 miles is acceptable in the C5 Corvettes and LS1 Camaros.

I personally find the oil usage of the LS6 and LS1 engines much more severe.

While I am sure there are some real engine failures out there, they are for the most part in the minority of engine replacements. Ford has also been replacing 4.0 SOHC V6's for engine noise only.
Does this mean they would prematurely fail????........ NO....... it just means they gave in to customer pressure for the noise.

Sal, I agree with what you said about longevity of performance engines 100%.

Perhaps one reason so many customers are picky about their vehicles is that the manufacturers have for years been advertising "quality". At Ford, "Quality Is Job One". Right? So, the customers have just bought into the hype, and expect everything to be perfect, or near perfect.
That is my theory.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Wards Automotive in 1999 rated the Lightning 5.4L one of the 10 best auto engines in the world.
