Tapping into ignition wires
Can anyone who has done gauges tell me where they tapped into the ignition wires. How the hell can you tell which one to splice into when there are 20,000 wires under the dash.
Specifically I am wiring my A/F ratio gauge and it says I have to wire into a 5 amp fused wire off the ignition. So I know many of you guys have the same gauge can anyone help a brotha out.
Oh and where did you pick up the dimmer switch to power the lights for the gauges. I think it would be trick to be able to dim them with the dash.
Thanks a ton,

This is a generic respone, but lets see if it will work.
Look in the fuse block for a curcuit that is set on the ignition and tap that.
When I wired up my gauges I found the fuse in the fuse block that runs the dash lights. I tapped into it and had a fuse and dimmer function right there. If you do not have a seperate fuse for your gauges, pull the light switch and find the wire using a test light or ohmmeter for the gauges. Tap that wire.

Thanks Sidewalk but is there any Lightning specific knowledge out there that someone wants to share.........I hate searching for wires and I get frustrated easy.......just a personal flaw there

Non at all. I just was curious if some people, who have done the exact same thing that I am doing, could give me some insight. I guess I was just looking for something more specific.

Well I have everything wired and installed except for 2. How do you find the radio wire for the A/F gauge. I dont have the 4 prong tool for pulling the radio. I know the radio is on fuse 8 (I think) it is a 5 amp fuse but I cant follow the wires off it.
Also I need to get into the ignition for my fuel pressure gauge, where is that at.
If anyone can help I appreciate it.

inside the fuse box on the driver's side is where the dimmer fuse is. it's the middle row of little colored fuses and it's the forth from the bottom. it has a little 5 on it and should be orangish. just pull the fuse out and put a little piece of the wire into one of th holes and then put the fuse back in to hold it down. Mind you this is the dimmer switch and it is only powered when the lights are on. Use it if for the little lightbulbs to back light if you dont have an LED version
also soap how did you tap into the O2 sensor... my comp can't really display pics and i've been trying to get the damn thing working all morning. Isn't there a little wire that runs inside the cabin too rather than pushing the wire through the firewall?

The little "boot" at the bottom of the firewall under the gas pedel is where I went through the firewall. I didn't want to drill if I didn't have to. I used a 2 wire tap (they are like $1.59 for 3 or four of them at a local parts store. I tapped into the driver side back 02 sensor. Black is the signal wire!!!!!!

Soap, if you want to take the radio out all ya have to do is take a coat hanger and cut two pieces of wire from it. Cut 'em about 6 inches long and bend them in the shape of a "U". Stick the ends in the holes on the radio and it will slide right out. Or if you happen to be at a Wal-Mart go to the car audio section and you can buy them pre-made for about $3-$4. Also, if you don't mind me asking, what does your screen name mean/why did you pick it? Just wondering cause I make soap for a living!

Oh, I see. Nope, didn't take my screen name, I've used 96Cobra since I bought my Cobra in Feb. of 96. I used to have it as "96Cobra" on all kinds of boards (corral (before they changed the format) and Musclestang, and even here.) But then I left the boards for a while and someone else picked up that name on each board, so I added the "z" in front. I think I saw before that you were from (or near) Chicago, and we used to have a soap plant there, so I thought maybe you were a soap maker too! LOL
