Tires---what the heck..

What kind of tires are you faster Lightning's running? I have 26" DR's and I ran out of engine at the track today in 3rd gear. Is everyone that is running over 108 traps using a 28" tire? I'm just trying to find out what my options are. It's a bummer when you hit the rev-limiter in 3rd and still have more 1/4 mile to run. Especially if you run a 12.6@95 mph

I think my limiter is at 6k. I have the stock 3.73's. Maybe it's something else I think the 26" ET streets are a little bigger around than the BFG 255/50/16 drag radials. All I know is that I could not make a full run today. Jeff

Wink

It's called overdrive. It's better than hitting the rev limiter. 1BADTK has had to do this before because of gearing.

1BADTK uses O/D because with the short tires, 4.10 gears, and the speed he runs; the motor just winds out. We on the other dont run out of motor useing 3.73 gears and running just a tad slower. But we are turning ~6000RPM through the traps. Both of us the the M/T ET Streets.

The only way to have a taller tire is to use a 15" wheel and use bigger slicks, or wait for M/T to release the rumored 29" tall 16" rim slicks.

Exactly what I was talking about Lightningboy. My first run was 12.6@100 . The L fell flat on it's face and I was not quite at the end of the run. I tried a second run with the OD turned on and the L would not shift into 4th at WOT. That run was 12.8@95 Since the track that I was at is not well prepped the stock F1's were out of the question. I guess I need to get some 15" wheels and 28x10.50 ET drags of 28X11.50 Streets. Here are the number from my run before I tached out...
60'---1.75
330'--5.18
1/8---8.01
mph--86.58
1000'---10.48
1/4---12.6
mph---100.6

What year is your truck, and what is the diameter of your DR's?

JeffsLightning: You are not hitting the rev limiter (I do not believe you are). My L did the same thing about a month ago. It ran lean and took out plugs. It was doing exactly what you are describing. The L was falling on its face at the top of 3rd gear. I went down the track 2 more times thinking something else was worng (also trying to do in to OD). With each run it was getting worse. After each run I would open the hood to look for a loose connection or something. After the 3rd run I found antifreeze on the engine. It took out the head gasket. After the Ford dealer replaced the motor I asked for the old plugs and found that almot everyone had the electrode burnt off. This was the reason it was laying down at the top of 3rd. Hope this helps.

Yep that sounds like it Tom. I don't believe I trashed a head gasket though. My L runs and has a slight miss. I'm changing the plugs later this week. Thanks for the info...Jeff
