Throttle Bodies - Are they all the same?

Eventually I am goin to buy a new throttle body. I was bored so I decided to look at what my choices were. I looked at the ones on JDMs site, LFPs site, BaBolts Site, and the JL ones and they all look pretty much the same except for the logo on top. Are they all the same? Or are they different sizes or something? I know that some, like JLs, have polished levers and some dont, and there are minor appearence differences, but again, arent they all the same performance wise?

thanks
joe

How much different can they be? I'll take mine round, I'll take mine square, send me mine in a triangular format. Extrude hone mine, make the hole in mine 90mm + 1cm. Not a flame, just making a point. They all do the same job.

Since JL's is SUPPOSE to be a enhanced version of some others T/B, I would say get it. He said he even fixed some flaws in it!!!

I have received a couple of requests to keep an eye on this thread. Since I do not see anything here that has reached "flame level" I see no reason to close it. If it does spin out of control, Doug or I will hopefully be on top of it. Please be respectful. Thanks.

Steve

similarities - they are all oval, they only increase HP a little and improve throttle response

differences - $$$, who sells them, and appearence.

Joe,

Do you want a billet throttle body or just a larger throttle body? If you are not wanting the dress up look of billet I would get the Ford unit that is set up for the Lightning linkage. Several vendors sell them just look for best price. If you are looking for the dress up factor of billet then its really which one you find attractive. You just have to pick the one that you like the looks of the best. There is not going to be any huge power gain (billet or standard)with any of them so it's just a question of the one you like to look at more. Hope that helps.

JL = "enhanced"?!

Now That is a pretty audacious way to defend ripping off someone else's design

As far as enhanced, the "Lightning" logo is really a downgrade not an enhancement. it looks like a Cartoon

I like BABolt's logo way better (among other things) , just my .02 and i don't even have his products! it just sounds like he knows what he is doing.

Guys, a throttle body is a precision part just like any other part of the truck. It's not just a hunk of metal with a flap. A lot of engineering, flow testing, and design goes into making one. Without favoring or dis-favoring ( is that even a word? LOL) anybodys part, let me list a few important things you should ask when buying a throttle body..

1. Does the shaft ride on bushings or bearings?

2. Does the TB have end seals on the shaft?

3. What kind of metal is the shaft made from, and is it coated for corrosion resistance?

4. What kind of metal is the throttle plate made from, and is it coated or plated for corrosion resistance?

5. Does the throttle blade attach to the shaft with the proper crush screws?

6. What are the benefits of the inlet design? A throttle body is not just a chunk of metal with hole in the center. The air needs to be ramped in at certain angles, it has to follow certian flow paths to ensure the least amount of turbulance, and noise reduction.

So you see, there is much more to a throttle body than a piece of metal with a flap. Countless hours of R&D, CAD programming, air flow testing, prototyping and long term element resistance testing goes into making one.

Hope this helps.
