OT:Can you use AOL with a cable modem?

Swapped over to a cable modem and the installer disconnected AOL settings. Since I have a contract with them till the end of the year, I was hoping to use it with the cable modem. Can this be done or do you have to use the dial-up.

Yes you can, just click the setup tab. There is a option that will allow you to do that. My only question is why, once you get used to IE or netscape you will never want to logg onto AOL again.

You can use a cable modem with AOL. That's what I do. All you have to do is go to your billing section and select "I will provide my own connection" and it will change your AOL bill from $21.95 a month to $9.95 a month. Then just reset the connection for a cable modem through your AOL sign on screen under settings.

Yes. What Sal said is right. Mine only went down to $13.99 though. I guess I got screwed.

Of course! I grew up with the original and this one has a little of the original flavor mixed in with the more linear story lines of the contemporary versions. Besides, how can you put down a show that has a hottie with pointed ears and skin tight spandex sans the underwear. "Enterprise" is a hit with me! Scott Bacula as Captain of the Enterprise is a little disappointing though, I must admit.

I have Bellsouth FastAccess DSL and Comcast @Home Cable (free deal), but it seems w/in a few days (by Sat. I believe) you all w/ @Home service is going to be CUT OFF! Read the news today...the bankruptcy judge is most likely going to kill it. AT&T will not offer any more to buy Excite@Home and Excite@Home will not take what AT&T is offering.

I like DSL way mo better. More stable, always on as well, or you can turn it off easier, plus it's more secure, not to mention the upload is usually quicker (256kb vs 128kb) depending on where you are located. The download is always 1.5 w/ Bellsouth vs. @Home's average range of 500kb to 2 megs (it's usually on the slow side) because of too many users at the same time. You're lucky if you get faster w/ cable. Very lucky!

Those who can't get DSL, well pretty soon you'll be able to or are just now able. Most DSL companies have upgraded their switches and devices to carry the dsl stream/signal way mo farther now! So call and check. If you are a Bellsouth customer go to www.fastaccess.com and see if you qualify now.

Anyway, the FCC regulates telephone companies so we DSL customers never have to worry about having our service cut off because of that crazy crap like Excite@Home is doing.

As for AOL, even though it blows a lot, it's still got a lot of cool she-ought in it. I have had it for nearly 10 years. Can't be $9.95 BYOA (bring your own access) for unlimited service. I use mainly AIM over AOL to chat, but love AOL's mail abilities especially in the forwarding capabilities (stores the file on AOL's server so you do not have to reupload). Plus you can send any file all day long up to 17 megs or so w/out it being rejected like your ISP normally would over 3 to 5 megs.

Bfb,
When the cable business gets the regulations like bell has then the cable business will be a lot more stable than it is now. The cable modem problem was caused by Excite@Home not by Comcast or AT&T, Insight or *** Communication or any other cable company. In the near future all of the above mentioned cable groups will have their own servers. In fact I know that Comcast is setting their's up as I write this.
Some of the cable companies are trying out IP modem phones and I get to test one out at my house. Sooner or later cable companies will have to be regulated if they want to put this on the market.
With DSL there are different levels to get and you pay for the speed. The faster you want to go, the more you pay. Nothing wrong with that. That is what we do here.

just my .02 worth.

Steve

The price of AOL's BYOA...bring your own access plan has gone up from 9.95 to 14.95. They offer DSL and some cable service but not much and if you are in a rural area might as well not even think about it.

If you still havent got it to work with your exsisting AOL account, email me and I will show you exactly how to do it.

15 Bucks a month for an email account and proxied Content Holy cow.... What a way to make a fortune.....

Do a search here on AOL and you will find long decriptions of how AOL's network works and why many folks who have used the web for a while move away from AOL ....

to be honest, if you have to pay for the account, the best way to do it, if you just want to have AOL, is use the broadband connection so you can get around the "proixed content". Trying to access the web through aol versus an external browser connection is where you see the differences
