? for all you computer wizards

I have a computer and just upgraded to windows xp from windows 95. Well after completion i went to use the internet (internet explorer). I went to internet options then the connections tab. Since i am on a lan i went to lan settings, Under proxy server put a check next to use a proxy server for your lan. Then went to advanced and next to HTTP put in the EXACT proxy address as the same computer across the desk from me and the same port also. Completed all of that and went to use internet and it says the website is not responding. What do i need to do to get the internet working again? Thanks in advance

You should verify that your network card drivers are installed correctly and that your machine has a valid IP address. Can you see other PCs on your lan? Also, if your IP address is hard coded (static, which means you have to type it in at some point manually) then there are some other setting as well that you may need. If you have a dhcp server, or cable router(which i doubt, if you are using a proxy address), then reboot and see if you can "ping" another PC on your network, or even ping the ip address of the proxy server....-You might try this on the other PC that is working, then on yours.

Good luck
Jeff

If you were able to post this, aren't you on the internet?

Ping the gateway or another machine (if the internal network is running IP). If you don't get a response, then the network wasn't set up correctly during the upgrade. If that's the case, most likely it's the network card driver.

(Also, uncheck the proxy server and have it automatically detect the settings).

Worst case, buy a Mac.

Spike

(Just noticed TruBlu had the similar thoughts. Every machine I've upgraded to XP has had network card driver problems.)

try going to your network properties and hit repair,, this won't always work, but if there is any issue with hardware not working, or anything obvious it'll tell you. Also, have you tried to have it automatically scan for an ip adress, i'm not so sure how your network is setup, but through my router all i have to do is check one box and i'm good to go. I hate messing around with networking stuff, like to keep everything simple, i'm a hardware guy.

Thats strange thought, I've upgraded several machines to XP and the only problem i've ever had is with TV tuner cards. Some brands are notorius for horrible drivers though.)

Where do you find network properties? Also it has an intel 21041 based PCi Ethernet adaptor in the the computer. The device status says the device is working properly.

Just found repair, clicked repair and box popped up that said "The following steps of the repair operation failed: renewing the IP address and flushing the ARP cache." Please contact me on instant messanger right now at spnky874.
