Admittedly, I'm no mechanic...my question is could someone explain how rods get damaged? What exactly that means? Thanks in advance!!!

Since Ford uses the same block for the 4.6 and the 5.4, they put a longer stroke for the 5.4. With the longer stroke, there is a six inch connecting rod going from the piston to the crank. The length of the rod is what makes it weak. When you make so much torque (not HP, becuase HP is a product of TQ), it will stress the rod and over time cause a failure. From what I have seen, it takes about 600Lbs of TQ to break a rod(s).
