motor oil?

jesus christ, i can hear the sirens of the search police now. Things change. Many guys recomment syth oil , mobile 1 and such. I read through my manual and there was no specific info, about warrenty and syth. SVT says to use ford spec oil because the engine weren't tested with synth and they can't answer questions as to how they'll hold up. I've also been told not to use synt untill after about 3000 miles on the engine, which I have surpassed.

I'm going to change my oil, and want to use mobil 1. Recommended 5-30? Would this void my warrenty from anyone's experience. Just want to be positive and you guys are all pretty sharp as far as I can tell. Well, most of you. Filters?

Smile OIL

I HAVE BEEN USING 5W-30 ROYAL PURPLE FULL SYNTHETIC OIL SINCE 3000 MILES AND HAVENT AHD A PROBLEM EVER WITH ANY WARRANTY WORK AND I USE A MOBILE 1 SYNTHETIC OIL FILTER. I ALSO CHANGED MY TRANSMISSION OIL OUT WITH ROYAL PURPLE TRANSMISSION FLUID, ALSO DID DIFFERENTIAL GEAR OIL IN REAR END WITH SYNTHETIC GEAR OIL. MY WHOLE TRUCK HAS ALL SYNTHETIC OIL EVERYWHERE I CAN. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT. ON THE OTHER HAND MY BROTHER USES NOTHING BUT AMSOIL SYNTHETIC OIL IN HIS L. AND HE HASNT HAD ANY PROBLEMS. AS LONG AS YOU CHANGE IT REGULARY AND KEEP ON TOP OF YOUR MAINTENCE YOU WONT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS.

Mobil One will not void your warrenty, infact it will be one of the best things you can do for your engine. I have been using it for over 20 years and have never had any oil related problems.

Doesn't the Cobra R use Mobil 1 from the factory? If it's good enough for their 5.4's it is probably good enough for ours!

Maybe I misread something some where, but isn't 5W-20 recommended by Ford for the Lightning??? I ask this because I can't find 5w-20 anywhere! Is 5w-30 the way to go?

Somebody mentioned Mobil 1 oil filters??? What is the part number for the one that fits Lightnings?

Thanks,

5W30 was the recommended oil for '99 and '00. 5W20 is recommended for the '01+. Very few brands carry 5W20 syn.

Yep - 5W-20 is what my owners manual said to use, and I couldn't find anything like it anywhere except the dealer. I went to the dealer to get some of the Motorcraft 5W-20, and that stuff was really expensive!!

But, they said that other oils would not void the warranty, so I let them dump some Mobile 1 in for the first couple of services (with receipts of course).

So now I do my own oil changes dumping in Mobile 1, and if there is any warranty problems, will dig out those receipts.

If you want another oil suprise, just wait 'til you have to change the oil in a limited slip rear end!!! Just try finding 75W140 synthetic!!! I filled my rear diff with water, and thought I'd do the right thing and put in dry oil. The parts dept wanted $28 per quart. Boy, was I suprised when I went to get 4 quarts of this stuff.

Fortunately, I found a Union 76 80-140 synthetic that met the warranty specs. I had to buy a 5 gallon bucket, but it was still cheaper. One thing about this stuff though is that it smells really, really, really bad - and if you get it on anything, you might as well throw it away!!!

It kinda makes you feel like they want make a little extra profit from warranty requirements, huh???

I kinda miss the days when a drum of 30W and a drum of 90W was enough to cover everything!!!

5W20 Synthetic

Royal Purple makes 5W20 synthetic. The cheapest place I could find it was from JEGS @ 7.99/qt.

Royal Purple #11 synthetic racin' oil is a 5W20--started usin' it at 4,000 miles with a K&N Gold oil filter. Mobil 1 10W30 goes in my 97 Gran Prix and my 97 xlt f150.

Amsoil also make a 5W20......

In a word... Wal Mart

They carry the Motorcraft 5w20 syn oil @ $1.77 per qt.

I am on my forth oil change and went back to Motorcraft 5w20 syn. Had Royal Purple but twice I noticed blue smoke upon starting (really scarry) after the vehicle cooled down on very humid days (within the 3,000 miles I had the R/P in).

Yes... I am nervous and discussed this with my brother who is a Ford service manager. Unfortunately, he's part of the system and took the partyline stand that we always get from Ford folks.

IMO... R/P didn't cause my two brief puffs of smoke... but, we will see. I just changed it back this past weekend.

FYI... I don't drive my "L" no where near as agreesively as most on this board.

I have been using Castrol GTX since I was a kid. Never had a engine failure yet. And I tow a 25 foot travel trailer with the L. I do change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. Bob.

The Motorcraft 5w20 syn oil @ $1.77 per qt. is a Semi Synthetic. I have been putting Mobil 1 Synthetic in all my cars for a while and found a trend in my car buying habits (do not keep the cars very long). I have decided to use the Motorcraft 5w20 semi synthetic.
