quick ? on wax
quick ? on wax
Can someone tell me exactly what causes wax to leave swirly looking marks after you take it off. I've seen it happen once before with kit wax and now I have seen it with Mcguires. Any info will be appreciated, thanx.
Swirl marks are actually microscopic scratches in the finish. These are often caused by the use of a buffer with the wrong type of polishing pad and/or wax/polish. Automatic car washes also can cause swirls, especially on clear coat paints. Another culprit is hand application or removal of product using a harsh material, or pads and cloths that have picked up micro abrasives from falling on the ground or improper storage.

I agree. It is not the wax it is the applicator or what is used to remove the wax. It doesn't take much to scratch clear coat so you need to make sure you use 100% cotton towels. Many towels say they are cotton but actually contain some nylon which will scratch the surface.
True about towels:

Thanx for the replys guys. I understand exacltly what you all are talking about. That's not exactly what I was talking about, though. Let me be more precise. These are swirl marks that look more like smeres instead of scratches. It kinda looks like maybe the humidity was too high (too much mositure in air) and the wax just wouldnt dry, causing it to kinda just smere when I tried taking it off. Kinda like what a little oil film would look like. BTW I used an applicator to put it on and 100% cotton to take it off. Any info will be appreciated. thanx

Are you applying the wax after you use tire dressing? If you are, don't do it. Did you mention what type of wax you are using? Are you putting it on in a thin layer?

Q2 yes (once happened with Kit at work and now mcguires at home)
Q3 not real thin
Btw, was a lot of mositure in air, fog started setting in a little before dark while I was doing it. Don't know if this has happened to anyone else.
I've noticed this a little with polish and alot with a carnuba wax. It's like it doesn't dry and no matter how much you rub and change applicators it just doesn't want to come off. Of coarse, it is pretty close to sunset when I am finishing.
That could be my problem, that it hasn't had the time to dry.
Anyone else...?
