How do you remove lower part of air box?

I had planned on cutting holes in the bottom of my factory air box last weekend but could not figure out how to get the stupid thing out of the truck! There are a couple of rubber bushings underneath that connect through a metal piece. Has anyone removed thiers? I may end up having to cut the holes with it in the truck, but I had rather not.

just grab it and pull upwards, the rubber plugs will pop right out of the metal below, once you do it you'll feel silly it's so easy.

later,
chris

Ok, I'll eat some wheaties and just yank like he!!

Have any of you guys cut your box and noticed any gains? I have heard it is good for 2-3 lbs. of boost.

I have looked into the aftermarket filter kits but decided to keep the stock appearance and hack up my box.

Box Mod

It wont provide any additional boost. Only way to do this is to turn the S/C faster. ( I.E. Pulleys ) But it will ease airflow into the intake. Alot of people are concerned with "Hot" air coming in..while this is true at a stop and slow speeds as you are going down the road this area will be pressurized by the outside air and not be as "Hot" as everyone thinks.

This mod will probably not allow as much "hot" air into the engine as an open element does. I too am concerned about this. I know that not only can you lose power, but it can also cause erratic idling, which I do not want.

I have been watching my boost gage close lately, and have not seen it above 9 psi. I have heard that by cutting the box it will put the needle in the black! Maybe I'll find out.

Hey O1, I wouldnt rely on these factory gauges that much...mine without any mods from the factory put the needle into the black at about 11-12 psi...???? Its only suppose to be boosting 8 psi. Im looking towards an aftermarket gauge to see some true #'s

Yes, I agree. But I am just going to use mine in this case for comparison purposes - before and after cutting holes - to see if it really does increase boost. It's all relative!

Hey Blown: Did you notice a change in your idle quality after installing your ram-air? I installed a cold air intake on my '97 Cobra and it really hurt my idle quality (made it rough).

bastage: n a creative and careful word manipulation from the movie Johnny Dangerously in which a character replaced common obscenities yet conveyed the same meaning and achieved the desired response.

for example:

Some of you corksucking sumanabatches need to get your head out of your fargin icehole.

Audio? Sure...

Bastage

If you cut a hole in the bottom, you better run a tube to let outside air in, or you'll be just using the hot engine air. On the '01's, even adding a conical filter as I did, did not add any boost. There was a big post awhile ago regarding this subject. I use a JL ram air system and I go back and forth and also use my modded stock airbox with a 3inch hole. The only difference i feel is a quicker throttle response with the ram air system. The '99's and '00's respond much better to these mods because the '01's have a revised, bigger airbox.

Is the 3" hole in your factory airbox piped to outside the engine compartment?

So basically I just need to leave it alone, right?

Yea, because you wouldn't "feel" any difference, really. Once you start modding, bigger pulley, chip, then giving the motor more air will help more. As i mentioned earlier, will give a little better throttle response. The open filter, JL's new one or Sal's PSP Fast Air system is the latest and greatest combination of an open element and a closed factory box. Kinda the best of both worlds. But again, you wouldn't really feel any dif.
