How hard to install long tubes on a L ???

I have not looked under the truck much but I wonder how difficult it is to install long tubes. The BBK's on my 96 cobra were the biggest pain it A$$ I have ever dealt with but the benefits were awesome.

Just Curious :)

Hey Bob havent i saw you on the Corral before, I know I have.

Anyway i was lookin at the pics of your cobra and noticed you have what looks like an S-trim on it.
How does the power and handleing of your L compare to the cobra.
I ask because i have an S-trim on my 95 GT and I have this nawing feeling that i might be disapointed in the power the L makes as compared to the Mustang.

Thanks
Andy G

Andy -

Yeah i have been on the corral for years under "vobra46"

As far as comparing the two its sort of apples to oranges, the cobra had an s-trim and every bolt on available, it was making 13psi @7200rpm. The most power it ever put down was 471 in august in 105deg heat here in mobile. In decent air and a little bit leaner tune it would make 500+

I took the cobra back to stock and traded it for the lighting in early october. I plan on building a true 4.6 dohc race car for fun ford weekend, mod shootout, ect ect. starting next year. The lightning will be a very nice / awesome tow vehicle for me.

I am not dissapointed with the lightning at all

Its just a different beast thats all

I'll be looking forward to your install post as well. If I get them, I will pay to have them installed but am concerned about the O2 sensors(wiring harness length). What muffler/cat-back system are you going to be using?

Btw, thank you Totaled for your quick and helpful email on your headders.

Beefcake,
My longtube headers are connected to the bassani xpipe. The mechanic that does most of my work charged me 3 hours for the installation.

My mechanic had my stock system off and the headers on in three hours. You will need a set of the ford manifold gaskets and will also probably have to lengthen your O2 sensor wires. He said some stubby and curved wrenches helped to get to a few of the hard bolts.

Totaled - Did you get your headers from JDM or Lightningperformance. Did you dyno? JDM posted that he got 35 hp with his long tube headers; that's alot more than I saw.

Bob, we've got a set of long tubes that we custom fit on our 01 test truck. To be totally honest, they were easier to install than any of the shortys we've done. We did have to lift the motor a tad, buy you have to do that with the Bassani shortys also.

We are having our prototype long tubes produced for us in the near future. The current prices are rediculous in my opinion, so we are going to try to offer a quality long tube, for a more realisitic price. Whether we achieve that goal, only time will tell, but that's what we are shooting for .

I got mine from Lightning Performance Products. I have never had my L on a dyno but they made a huge difference on my L With the addition of a JL 5# lower pulley and the long tube headers I went from 12.22 to 11.79

That is where I got my headers also. They are really quality pieces but I agree with Sal that they are expensive.

I dynoed mine and got 12 rwhp at lower rpms and 7 rwhp at peak hp. My exhaust consists of high flow cats H-pipe and twin dynomax race magnums.

JDM has reported their headers resulted in a 35 hp increase. I would like to know the details because that is substantially more than anything I've heard including discussions with Jim 6-7 months ago.

Makes me wonder about my header design and/or exhaust configuration.

NeedFourSpeed,
I guess the only difference is my Bassani catback system but I wouldn't think it would make that much difference. What kind of mods are you running? The reason I ask is I have most every bolt on mod out there and the headers helped me tremendously!! As for the cost, yes they are expensive but I would love to find another $1000 mod that would give me another 3 or 4 tenths excluding nitrous Normally when adding mods you make big gains initially then deminishing returns on dollars invested so IMHO the headers were well worth the cost on my L
