Question about Red Line motor oil
Redline oil
I have used it in my 1991 Z281LE road course car(sold) while 'racin' in a driver's school for several years. Never an engine-related problem--sold it with 150,000 miles on the 305ci eng. It was a daily driver too.
I started using Royal Purple in my new L because they have a 5W20 synthetic racing oil. I ran Motorcraft 5W20 for the first 4,000 miles before switching over to R/P. Have almost 16,000 miles on her now with no piston-slap or any other eng. problem.

I use Redline, but I don't know if it can quiet down piston slap. I use it because I read Nuts and Bolts newsletter (which is kind of like a Consumer Reports for car stuff). They say it's the best synthetic out there. I only drive my L on weekends, and I know synthetic bonds to the engine better, so the first start up on the weekend won't wear the engine as much as a non synthetic oil would. It's a little pricey ($7.50 per quart) and not available in a lot of stores. I know a lot of members on this board use Mobil One. I have 12,000 on my L, and this includes about 7 or 8 trips to the road course, and a few times to the dragstrip. No problems yet, and it alway runs cool at the road courrse ( which is 75 to 100 very hard miles each trip).

I've been using Redline (10w 30) in my 99 since 7500 miles, the piston slap it had is nearly gone now at 15000. It immediately quieted down, and didn't last as long after changing. Now it only makes a slight noise for the first 100 feet or so of driving.
I also just changed the atf to Redline high temp, made a difference in shifting, much more positive and somewhat firmer. I added the 4x4 pan at the same time. took 4.5 gallons, that included draining the converter.
I get my Redline from - sorry for the plug- Synlubes.com, I usually get it in two days on ups ground. They also carry all Redline products. Prices are pretty much the same at all places from what I can tell.
ps- also have redline 75w 90 l/s gear lube in the rear, I dumped and the Ford "synthetic" crap at 5k, had it analyzed as well and found it was loaded with grit. Was worried about noise, it since has gone away upon changing oil.
ps part 2- also use water wetter in both coolant reservoirs too! Gee, I'm starting to sound like a Redline commercial!!
