Lightning Vs BMW M5
Lightning Vs BMW M5
ok guys...
JohnnyL boasts '01 Lightning- 13.2 1/4 off the showroom floor..
thats a great time...
Road and Track Magazine Volume 53 # 2 october 2001 states:
stock '01 BMW M5 0-60 in 5.0 and 0-100 in 11.7... last but not least, 1/4 in 13.4 @ 107.8
dont flame cause i know driver error and whatnot can effect the M5 times...
but am i not correct when i say the lightning can in fact, beat an m5 in the 1/4 mile run.
please discuss

I think his 1/4 time is the best EVER stock time recorded so far for a 01 L. Are you sure the M5 was tested under optimal conditions (best driver, strong stock motor, good track). I mean, his times were crazy.
m5 vrs L
13.2 is a great time for a stock L. but...eventhough this truck is "lightning" fast. i still think a m5 would take the checkered flag. there is no doubt in my mind of the outcome. what do you guys think though? i would like to know more about this too. thanks

You guys can't be serious! My buddy at work just got an '02 M5 3 weeks ago. Who cares if it's faster? It is the sweetest ride I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. It has replaced the Super Duty Crew Cab as the lunch wagon. I've only had the opportunity to "race" with a passenger in my truck and 3 in his car. I was able to pull away easily. However, I don't think it was fair given the number of passengers. Back to my original statement, it just doesn't matter if my L is faster. The M5 is so awesome. It's got nav, 2 10" subs, rain sensing wipers, sunlight sensing climate control, motorized headrests, onboard tire pressure monitoring, and most impressive of all, side mirrors that fold up and out of the way at the touch of a button. Less important is how this thing pulls like a madman, unless the DSC kicks in. Five liters and 394 hp is unbelievable for a normally aspirated V-8.

motortrend says....
in the march 2001 vol.53 no 3 motor trend magazine there are stats for the m5. it says it does 0-60 in 4.75, and a 13.07 @ 107.21 mph. i seriously doubt a stock L could beat these stock m5 numbers. with out mods a L would loose. now do not get me wrong. i love lightnings...but when people ask questions i want to give facts. and the facts say the m5 will win.

When those car magazine guys test cars in the 1/4 mile they test with the knowledge that they do not own the test car. They delight in how high they can rev the motor and dump the clutch. This is done until the optimal dump RPM is determined. To say the least, this is tough on the drivetrain.
Now flash forward to Joe M5, he just paid what 60 to 70 k for his new toy. He is going to rev it up to what 4000 rpm, dump clutch and maybe get that low 13 second 1/4 mile if he hits every shift perfect, NOT.
I would imagine the L takes 4 out of 5 street races. The L owner has no problem flooring the 4 speed auto on a routine basis.

Malibu,
Then the answer is the M5. From the factory, the car has a speed governor set to 154. However, with a chip from Dinan, this limit can easily be removed. This would allow the top speed to be in the ~170 range. Realize that this chip would do nothing more than remove this limit. Therefore I wouldn't consider this a mod in the generally accepted definition of such.

REDHOTL,
You make a valid point. I tried to get my buddy to hit the quarter mile track with me 2 weeks ago. He politely declined citing the short clutch life of the M5. You are mistaken about the price, though. After all was said and done, he paid $80,400 including tax, title and license. And that's because he was able to get it at MSRP in the metropolis known as Beaumont, Texas. The best part of it is that he has to pay a gas guzzler tax. I get half the gas mileage he does!

m5 owners probably know how to get there car movin. hitting every shift perfect is not that hard when you own the car and drive it everyday. it becomes second nature. i think saying that a L would beat a m5 4 out of 5 times on a street race is either wishful thinking or being a little bias. either way...the L looses.
