thanks edward...

BUT, im not doubting a top speed of an M5.. we all know it will beat a Lightning in top speed. considering the Lightning is a flying Brick with virtually no arodynamics (spell?)

the target of conversation is short distance racing. 1/4 mile and 0-60.

Once again, the M5 wins, assuming the DSC is turned off. Roughly equal horspower and much less weight equals a win - even the 100lb.ft. torque deficit.

Cool

The beemer is lighter, more aerodynamic, more powerful, and has a six speed. You figure it out. However, take your $35K Lightning and spend a few thou on mods, and it will beat your stock M5 in the 1/4 for half the price. Its still a truck, though, not a luxury car. Then again, I'd rather have my truck and my boat than a luxo snobbomobile.

As soon as I can get my hands on a camcorder, it's on! We already had a burnout clash. He won What can I say, I don't want to buy a new set of tires yet; and he wants to burn his brand new Dunlops off so he can get some Pilot Sports.

My 01 L is still stock since i've only had it a week and a half or so..mods coming real soon...BUT my best friends older brother has a brand new M5...Beemers are the badest ****in cars made..however we're talkin speed..and theres no doubt in my mind having driven both..the m5 is fast however..that the L smokes on it. And to prove it..i'm stayin at his house over the weekend in ann arbor..i'll have the proven results for you then!!! If i can find my damn camcorder..i'll even film the L pulling away!

ya it would be real nice to see that footage. just make sure whoever is driving the M has had a little experiance with the car. just to make things equal.

2001 M3 vs. Lightning

I can't really comment on an M5 other than they are a bad a** lookin luxury car! I can comment on a 2001 M3. I had the privilege of street racing one about two weeks ago. It was my first race in the 2001 L and I still hadn't worked out my launch just yet. I left from an idle only the tires barking a bit while he spun his after dumping the clutch. I had an immediate two lenghts on him and ended up with five to six lenghts when he shut down. I came to a stop sign again and he rolled down his window and said "I think I bought the wrong vehicle!" "Damn that thing is quick!" I could only smile from ear to ear, gave him a little nod and was on my way

So, if the M5 is anything like the M3 it would be a mismatch, but like I said, have not had any match ups with an M5. It would be very interesting though!

My sister just got an M5, I raced her in my 01 L and lost by about a car length. keep in mind the only mod i have is a JL chip, with a filter and pulley, plus some traction bars i could probably turn that around and pull a car length on her. anyway, ill try and get some footage for you guys.

Put a couple tight turns at the end of the 1/4 and a concrete wall at the end. I bet the M5 would "win"

Edward,

I stand corrected 80 k it is. Thats a lot of money!

lbc150,

I have driven about 350,000 miles in a stick shift cars (250,000 in one and 100,000 in another). I can shift real well. I have missed shifts, boged off the line and hit rev limiters in low gears. It happens. The big issue for quick times is how much punishment are you willing to inflict on your 80k car? To get those fast times you do need to dump the clutch, fry the tires and practice a lot to get it just right. Does this sound like your typical m5 / 1/4 mile racer type that everyone bumps into at the 1/4 mile track??? I can not make myself do that to my 911 Porche, are M5 drivers that much different?

Turns...beemers are probably the best handling cars in the world too! I love my L to death..i dont want any part of any beemer going through corners! I'll come up with that M5 footage this weekend!

i agree with you that fast runs require harsh treatment of the vehical. but i also think that if the person is going to race a lightning in the first place that he would be the kind of person to go all out. so i stand by my previouse remark of the beemer winning. do you see my point? who would race someone but not do it all out. i can understand not wanting to practice launches on an exensive automobile. but any owner will tell you they have tried running thier car as quick as possible atleast once. especially someone who is excepting race invites out on the street.
