Have to tow this weekend, got some questions?

I have to deliver my Cobra this weekend.

Had a few Q's about towing with the L.

I'll be carrying my 15" jdm wheels and slicks in the back along with the stock, front and rear seats from the cobra. I am guessing about 200-250 max for all of that.

My cobra with the fuel in it should weigh about 3420 and I believe my trailer is about 1700, maybe a tad less.

Since I have been towing a while, i have a good tow setup, I have a weight distribution trailer hitch which distributes the weight pretty well.

Will I be ok with the tow?

also, i have the lincoln truck traks on the truck, do i need to remove them or will i be alright just removing the snubber. with the snubber i have a 2.1" clearence, with out the snubber i would guess a bit over 3 1/2" inches.

thanks.

Terry---I've already towed with my Lightning, with my Cobra, which weighs in around 3450 without me in it...The truck didn't even sag one bit, and thats with an 18 foot open trailer like yours...By the way, those trailers maybe weigh 1000-1200lbs tops, if that....I didn't even have the weight distribution kit on yet and it towed fine, but i took the overdrive off in some places as it was too slow for the overdrive and hunting for power, but otherwise it was fine, no problems at all...Thats one of the main reasons I went with the Lightning, so I could tow the Cobra to races...I couldn't afford the big 350 diesel and this was my only other option.....Where are you taking the Beast by the way??? Good luck and have a safe trip this weekend...

Beefcake,
I towed a 12 foot U-Haul trailer (POS) from Colorado to Ohio about 8 months ago. I got weighed and the trailer+my stuff weighed about 5400 pounds. The L pulled it marvelously, I pulled it out of OD on some of the hills but overall it just kept chugging. Be sure to pull your chip if you don't have a "towing" setting on it, it may cause detonation with the extra load. Have fun and drive safe! Later.

i am curious, why would it detonate with the chip,

i would think without the chip that is setup for the pulley i have, i would be looking at trouble

Pull The Chip OUT I bet that there is too much heat in the motor and there is not enough safety factor on the timing and fuel curves for a long uphill pull.

Keep the toung weight down.

i towed my parents explorer on a trailer similar to yours, with no problems. i also towed my race car 180 miles. No problems either time, you can't even tell you are towing until you try to get over 80 on the highway and then she may start wondering on the road a bit. Good luck!

We towed a 99 Vette 150miles with all of our own raceing stuff in the bed with no problems. About the only thing you might want to do is pull the chip.

talked to JL,

he said there is no reason to pull the chip,

he said if i was to hear detonation, then i could pull it, but highly unlikely

i also have some mach 1, unleaded racing gas

it makes 99 octane when mixed with 10 gallons of of 93,

i normally run 94,

i figure i'll take it with me and if i start to hear detonation, i'll mix 1/2 a can in with my full tank and that should bump me up to maybe 96 or so for some added protection

a/f is set at 12.3 JL told me which shouldn't be too crazy

Terry, 12.3 huh, hmmm, you and me know, that blower motors usually like 11.9 or better, but I guess 12.3 isn't bad...I think with the knowledge you and me both have from the cobra world, it makes our mods here alot easier and better....LOL...

Yeah, sorry to hear about the sell of the beast....Where is the guy located, is he going to race it?? I hope to see it still out somewhere.... Good luck

actually jeff, the cars like leaner better, lol, more power,

now, if we're talkin S A F E T Y factor, rich is better lol

i set the tune up for the guy that bought the car at like 10.5 to 1 with the speed pro lol. Only gave him 16 degrees of timing about 6500 lol

don't wanna take any chances on him blowing the thing up.

i am curious how the tow really affects the engine, something i've never dealt with in the cobra

i know there is weight being pushed, but wouldn't the rmp's vs load stay the same?
