Unhappy Front Tire Wear

I installed Herbs washers & 4 cam bolts around 5000 miles. I had a "so called state of the art Laser alignment" at that time. I went back to the same place 2 weeks later because the truck had a pull, that it never had before. They called it a drift, and said it was normal. They put it on the machine again and re-aligned it. (They pissed, moaned, and bi*ched the whole time.....We can't make mistakes..........but we want you happy.......and more bi*ching.) I have printouts from both visits. On the second visit he adjusted the Toe ONLY. He adjusted the "Total Toe" on one side. The left side has none. He explained to me that it does not matter to split it side for side, and it's ok to adjust it all on one side. Am I missing something here ? I'm a mechanic and cannot understand ? At one point, the owner (who has $50,000 into a late '70's Vette ? Why ? ), was overheard by my wife, "We should just give him his $65 back". I paid $97 to have it done the first time. They didn't charge me for the second time. I gave them the Lightning owner preferred specs both times.

I now have 12,700 miles. I have rotated the tires every 3000 miles, myself. I constantly check air pressure. No slalom or roadracing. My tires are wearing badly on the inside 1.5 inches. They also have bumps in the same location.

Does, or has, anyone who has installed Herbs washers and cam bolt kits, and had an alignment..............have this same problem?????

I need to get it aligned again, I guess ? I will NOT go to the same place that did it before.

I will be searching for another place with a Laser rack in Las Vegas.

I have NEVER hit a curb (everyone knows this blows our tires ), and there are NO curbs where I live at.

I have never seen this kind of wear, for this amount of miles on anything I have owned.

Please help with any input.

Thanks, Rick

why did you do the cam bolt kit? You didn't state anywhere that you lowered it. To my knowledge Herbs washers fix the clunk and the cam bolts are only for alignments after you lower it.

No it is not lowered. A cam bolt kit makes it fully adjustable for an alignment, and is a better set-up than the Ford factory shims that go on the bolts. You use the cam bolt kit with Herbs washers because you lose the adjustment of the lower control arm with the washers. Everybody on here told me that if you install Herbs washers, you need to put cam bolts in also.

Hope that explains things better.

Exclamation

Don't choose a shop because of the equipment, choose them because of their experience! I don't have a computerize alignment machine but I do the alignments rite.I have aligned more HP cars and specailty cars than just about anyone in the area. And my reputation is that it does not leave untill I am satified, I have fixed so called aligned cars that pulled and my truck was done by the dealer under warranty and the toe was in almost 1/2" asked them if they calibrateed their machine lately and they said every week.I ck'ed mine and it was dead on, so I KNOW they were not telling the truth.Stan

Thanks for all the info. I said to myself the other day " You can have the best equiptment there is, & if the person using it doesn't have the experience or training......... Well, you get a shoddy job.

I asked around while in Vegas yesterday, and was referred to a place that has been doing alignments for the last 39 years, at the same location. I just called them and got an appointment setup for Monday.

I'll dig up the specs. that I was givin here, and post them later.

I can't wait to have this never-ending alignment done correctly.

Ruslow> Nice work on the Panhard bar!!!! Now I have the "I wants" for one of them.

Here's a link to specs. I did a SEARCH LOL, and came up with this. It was Search, or go outside into the below freezing, to get them from the truck.

My alignment nightmare started here :

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...threadid=45090

I had terrible experiences with Auto Brake & Clutch, A.K.A. The Cool Guys, in Las Vegas, on Rancho Ave. These are the people I blame for my '01 F1's being worn down to about 3/32" on the inside 1.5 inches of tread, on all 4, as I rotated them every 3000 miles. By the time I figured out their alignment job was garbage, it was too late. The tires are useable, but far from what 13,000 conservative miles should look like. I'm not trying to bash these people, but hopefully keep someone from learning the hard way, like I had to.

Fast forward to today. I had my appt. with "Chicks wheel Alignment and Brake Service" at 1001 Ogden Ave. & 10th St. in Las Vegas. "Same location since 1959". They use older "Bear" equipment. They KNOW what they're doing. In and out in about 1 hour total. Jim drove the truck and said it pulled bad to the right. This is what the others called a "Drift". Ya right !

Anyone in the Vegas area needs frontend, brake or alignment work, go see Jim there.

Great service, quality work, at a fair price.

Thanks everyone for the great input. My '01 drives like it should now.

odd pul

my truck always seems to pull to the left. It is at 3.5k miles. Sunday, I just put on my winter tires(first time) 235 70 16's on ford plain factory rims. Straight as an arrow??. Tires pressures were even on the f1' all around. I'm no expert but should a vehicle have to be alligned differently with different wheels, tires?
