Oh boy, here goes....
This is a known issue with the 1999 and 2000 Lightnings. The driver's side lower control arm has a slot it in, which causes the bolt to slide around in the slot as a result of the huge tires and wheels on our beasts. There is a Ford TSB for this issue. The TSB # is 00-25-8. It involves installation of a "toothed" washer to grip the control arm with more force. If you are lucky you also get the cam kit necessary for front end alignment and the alignment done for no cost. My experience with the fix is that it has worked. Others will chime in on this topic I'm sure. Your mileage may vary. Good luck with your truck!
frank2,
Do a search on "Herb's Washer" or "Clunk Fix" and you'll find a wealth of information on the subject.
Basically the lower driver side control arm bolt is sliding around. The washers from Herb fix the problem and you can install yourself-no problem.
Take a look at the bolt and you'll be able to see how it has moved.

I just noticed the front end clunk on my 99 when I am making a somewhat sharp turn and hit a speed hump or anything like that. Most of our Crown Vic cruisers do that after about 15-25k miles too. The Crown Vics are actually worse sounding than my L. I am going to have mine checked when I take it in for the supercharger/intercooler recall.
Herb,
The Bolt DID NOT sheer off.
I snapped the photo when I removed the washers in preparation for trading my 99 for a 01.
All is good. Washers are fine. Aren't they

Bob ,
You get me on that one! It was nice talking to you.
I'm glad they held up for you. This is the first that I have heard of someone taking them out of one truck, and putting them into another. Enjoy your new ride.
