Question New Elec. Gauge Install Help

Hey guys, I have a 2001 f-150 HD supercrew 5.4 that I want to install a water temp gauge as well as a oil presure gauge. I found the OEM sender for the oil but have not found the OEM sender for the water. Anybody have any ideas? Also, I want to have my OEM gauges in the dash cluster work in conjunction with my new autometer gauges. Mike Troyer suggested I visit the Lighting section, he said that you folks have installed alot of gauges and my be able to help me.

Thanks,

Bones.

Thanks Bob for the reply, Question, where can I go to get the "T" fittings and did you drill the T stat housing?

Look on the driver's side of the block behind the oil filter. There should be a plug there. This is where I put the sending unit for my Autometer temp gauge. No drilling, tapping etc.

bought the fittings at Lowes (take both oil sending units with you if possible)

I bought a seperate 'stat from Ford then drilled and tapped it. Buy small tap and dye set while at Lowes if you don't already have one and bring h2o sending unit with you to ensure the set has the correct tap thread size.

Test fit the h2o sending unit once drilled and tapped. you will need to install the thermostat bolt first when mounting the housing onto the engine. once all secure, install the h2o sending unit.

The oil sending unit install is tricky but can be done. Easiest access is to place left front of the truck on a jackstand and remove left front wheel then go in under the fender skirt. Accessing from underneath is a PIA.

Install the T section in to the block first, then each 90' piece. Take you time and use plenty of teflon tape.

Here is another thread that goes into some additional detail.

Feel free to email me if you need additional assistance.

Bob

Thanks again Bob for the info and if I get into trouble, I will email you. ASVT Ford Boy, The sender I see behind and next to my oil filter is the oil sender. Is there another plug next to that on yours?

Thanks again all,

Bones

Bones,

I just took a look at mine. It's behind the oil filter. directly below the freeze plug. You have to use an allen wrench or socket to get it out. Make sure you have a bucket there when you pull it, or if you don't feel like waiting for it to drain and don't mind getting wet, have the sending unit ready to put in as soon as you pull the plug. Hope this helps.

Bring up an old post from 2001 Speedin Bob, In the second picture I'm hoping someone can identify the large copper looking thing with the sensor threaded into it is. I think I need the part to install my oil temperature gauge.

Thanks in advance!

blast from the past.

MotorcycleMan,

I replied to your message via email.

The large copper colored item is the Autometer oil pressure sending unit. I'm guessing an oil temp sending unit will look like the sending unit in the thermostat housing picuted above.

Cheers,

Bob
