Phase I of stock vs. Bassani cat-back is complete...
All,
Phase I of my stock exhaust versus the Bassani cat-back system is now complete and I am hoping my numbers make me the "King of the Hill" for a stock 2001 truck (the only engine mod thus far is the 170-degree thermostat as everything else is sitting on a shelf in my garage waiting for the magic 1,500 mile mark including the filter, breather cap and NGK's...don't ask, I just want to make sure the truck's nice and broken in before the fun starts). My first pull went sadly astray as the truck downshifted from 3rd to 2nd and when it banged the 2-3 shift it spiked to 443 h.p. I would like to think my truck were that strong stock but I figure most of you guys won't let me get away with that one. The second, and strongest run of the three, netted a max of 348.8 h.p. (at about 5100 rpm) and 418.4 ft. lbs (at the very beginning of the run).
The third run, after the truck sat on the rollers for 10 minutes and heated up, netted about 19 h.p. less. The dyno shop didn't have a large fan to cool the truck between runs and no ice was used on the intake. The runs all occurred after a 35 mile drive to the shop with a 20 minute cool-down before doing the pulls.
I'm pretty stoked about the 348.8 number and I think the torque may be low as the second run didn't start recording until 3800 rpm (and the torque steadily drops from 3800 on). According to Sal, "I've dynoed many 01s and the lowest stock I've seen is 330, the highest is 347, so you're about average. Your torque does seem low for an 01 though, most are over 400 at the wheels." I'm hoping that my truck is one of the anomolies that Ford was nice enough to let eek off of their production line.
The skinny on all of the factors is as follows:
Absolute barometric pressure: 28.76 in. Hg
Vapor pressure: 0.27 in. Hg
Intake air temperature: 85.4 degrees
Correction Factor: 1.04 SAE
The Bassani cat-back should be here the end of this week or the beginning of next and we will see what happens after that goes on.
Other mods that will be dyno'ed one at a time are going to be:
JDM filter with JL "ram air" kit
JDM chip (street and race)
Breather cap
JDM 4 lb. lower pulley
Metco upper pulley
BaBolt throttle body
Electric fan/Cobra R water pump
Torque converter
Possibly long tube headers, nitrous and a windage tray

Sounds like you've got everything planned out Dan. Which dyno did you go to? I've heard good things about Pro Dyno in Tempe. Shoot me an email sometime, I'd like to check out your truck.
Thanks, Jeff
Thanks, Jeff
Yoda,
You're killin' me, man!
Remember, first one to 400 wins!!! And now that I know what this pig is good for stock I can "unleash the fury" (my Tom Green reference o' the day).
Kingpin - I went to Technodyne in Tempe. They actually specialize in racing Porsches and they had some high-dollar hardware in their shop. They have a dyno wall of fame but it may be a day or two before I can unseat the "Fast Bastard" Supra that went 722 rwhp. I called Pro Dyno (in fact a friend of mine owns Ultra Performance/Desert Rat in town and is friends with the guy at Pro Dyno) and they were nice enough to give the "acquaintance discount" of only $60/pull. Chris, the owner of Technodyne, had never done a Lightning before and spent about 40-45 minutes with me and only charged me $65 for three pulls. So, it appears that Pro Dyno is much more proud of their Dynojet than Technodyne is (Technodyne will even do A/F ratios for tuning purposes but I haven't had to go that route yet).
Drop me a line and we'll hook up.
Dan
P.S. Yoda - The bike will still be stronger unless I decide to "pass gas."

Need,
Darn you man! I wanted the strongest stock '01 L but it appears that it is not to be...I'm actually just glad that I got one of the "stronger" ones as starting at 330 h.p. wouldn't have made me very happy. The Bassani is now on the truck (with thanks going out to Yoda for helping me turn the wrenches and waking up the neighbors last Friday night at about midnight). I have to say that if the sound is any indication that thing is good for about 50 h.p. The truck now has a mean growl at idle and turns into a nice roar as you get into it. Phase II will happen either later this week or next week (it all depends on whether or not my schedule takes me out of town). I haven't forgotten and I do want to settle the debate once and for all so stay tuned.
I'm hoping for 400 rwhp when all is said and done once the chip, filter, ram air, plugs, 4 lb. pulley and throttle body go on...that's the goal and I hope I can give you a run on the mod side since you took me on the "stock" side.
