I've seen other more elaborate setups than this, and I might upgrade mine later, but for now, this is a really simple, inexpensive way to get some air up there. Involved no cutting or anything, just:

-$4.99 Flexible Aluminum duct - 3" by (expandable) 8 ft.
-3 tie wraps





Lawn blower test:
Held right up to it: mucho air flowage all around the filter
Held 5,then 10 feet away: still significant air flow right to filter

Nothing fancy, just $5 to get some fresh air up to the filter.

Thanks for others (DonC and others) for giving me the idea. Next time I'll do a more elaborate 'intake peice', but for now this works just fine.

 

Just a wondering, what is the cover around your filter, I'm thinking its to keep debree out of the filter with the addition of your Snorkle kit.

That 'sock' is an Outerwear cover. Works great at keeping the 'big' stuff away from the filter but doesn't seem to restrict the air flow(1/4 miled with and without-same ets.). I use one on my 97 f150 Airforce one filter kit and on my JL filter for my L.

Good start, when I did mine I cut my hand up on the air conditioning radiator, but I am all healed now. I am going to be doing a little tweeking on mine soon, will post some pics in the near future.

Just fdor aesthetics, I painted the inside of my "dryer duct" with flat black primer. It hides the duct work VERY NICELY.

 

Thanks for the info guys! I may work on my stock airbox this weekend. Does this mod really make a noticable SOTP (seat of the pants) improvement? I would expect 8-9 hp would be noticable.

 

Yes, that is a easy and cheap way to do it, but I don't like the way you can see it from the wheel well.
Myself, I am waiting to find a electric radiator fan and build a ram air pipe straight down through the front of the engine compartment where the old Clutch fan would sit. This way everything is still under the hood and the air scoop can come out from under the truck just behind the air dam. I took a air box from a old Saab Turbo and it makes a perfect mod for pushing air into the Filter. I'm just trying to find a cheap Electric Raditor Fan

 

how much extra hp did this bring? How much did this take off the 1/4 mile times? just out of curiousity. thank you.....

thats not a bad idea. Keep the stock airbox and mount a pipe to it going to near the front air dam. And inside the pipe have an electic fan to 'pull' air in. I'd imagine that would work a slower speeds, but as you pick up speed and creat more of a ram air affect a fan would hinder airflow.

 

Something like this? I removed the Pro M Filter for the Picture. We beat this subject to death over on the engines thread under "You Don't Need No Stinking Ram Air." I am still worn out from that one so if anyone has any questions, ask Sixpipes, he is running the 4 inch model.

No, I didn't mean put a fan inline with the air filter. I meant replace your clutch driven, water pump mounts cooling fan with a Electric Cooling Fan and then run your intake pipe straight down tin front of the engine where the fan used to set. This way you eliminate the drag on the motor from the stock cooling fan and you free up the room in the engine compartment to be able to run your intake straight down throught the engine compartment.
