Drags 101
OK....Got Lightning...got ET Streets....and going for the first time to track. Can someone give me some do's and dont's. Do you use a torque wrench when putting either wheel on and if so what size is it? Do you get a different crow bar than what came with the truck? Do you launch different with the ET's? I went out and got that sears jack that was on sale for $26.00. What else? Anyone got any good tips? Thanks for any info. Sorry for these novice questions but you have to start somewhere.
M J:
I just started 1/4 mileing back in June--got my ET Streets a couple months ago.
Yes, anytime you remove a wheel, you should torque the lug nuts when reinstalling. The nuts take 140 ft. lbs. of torque. The 'stock' lug nuts take a 21mm socket and the l/ns that I use with my ARE Baja wheels take a 7/8" socket.
You should be able to launch 'harder' with the MTs--after a 5 sec. smoke/burnout. MT tire psi should be 16lbs.--'hot'. I torque/brake at the line to about 1,000rpm and the 'roll' onto the throttle on the third yellow light(starting tree).
Practise, practise until you feel it's 'right' for you, your track, and your L. Your 60' times will tell you if you're improving.

When you go to put on the wheel you need to torque it to spec (1999 - 100Ft/Lbs 2000 - 150Ft/Lbs 2001 - 150Ft/Lbs). Depending on your tire and wheel width, you will have to try different air pressures. I would suggest start out at 18psi cold. Then after you make your first pass, let it down to 18psi hot/warm. After that you will have to experement to see what works better.
When you go for your burnout, go around the water box if possible. If you can do so, back up into the water box and blip the gas to turn the tires over. If you have no choice but to go through the water box, stop with your back tires in the water and blip the gas. After you have coated your slicks with water, pull forward so that your slicks are about 3 feet infront of the water box. Hold down the brake to the floor, and press the gas untill the tires break loose. Once the tires are spinning hold it at around 4000rpm. Once you see smoke start to come off the tires (adjust your mirror to see) begin a slow count of 5. When you hit 5, let off the brake and mash the gas. When you feel the tires grab let off the gas and slow down, then stage.
When you go to launch, hold down the brake and press the gas alittle to bring the RPM's up to about 1000. Again, you will have to do some testing as some tracks are good, and others arn't.
Other then that, have fun. If you have any questions, the track officals should be more than willing to help you.

Aluminum and/or alloy wheels are supposed to be torqued. Not to mention even-torqueing prevents premature rotor warpage. If you run through water after braking hard and wheels arent properly torqued, warped rotor. Even tire shops torque wheels now to save them money on repairs. I think I broke the record for use of the word "torque" in a post. lol
