Windage tray

Has anyone installed the windage tray on their L? Do you have a before and after dyno. The hp gains in the adds I have seen are complete BS but they must be worth some hp. Just curious of what other owners who have tried them have gotten out of them. Worth the money???

Canton makes the oil pan on the cobra r that inclues a windage tray that supposedly nets 32hp. I e mailed them two days ago for info on using this pan/tray combo on an L with no response as of yet.

Windage tray... hmmmm? Wind... aerodynamics? Wouldn't show on a dyno. Oil pan! Ok, you stumped me. What the hell is a 'Windage Tray'?

According to this D.S.S. Racing ad;

www.dssracing.com/DSS1001MA1.jpg

a windage tray 'frees up extra horsepower by reducing power-robbing windage!' Isn't that clear?

A windage tray is a flat device with holes that bolts to the bottom of the main crank bearings, in the engine oil pan. It attempts to separate the oil from the air in there so the crank counterweights aren't hitting oil laden air and wasting power. It also tries to keep air out of the oil to reduce foaming.

As an added benefit, some trays are structural and actually help stiffen the bottom end of the block for more strength. Some others are designed to be used in conjunction with a separate bolt-on support member.

Any improvements here should show up on a dyno. I'd like to see some numbers.

Any idea what the real hp gains on an L would be?? I know its not 32hp. Probably about 15hp I would assume but I would like back up before I spend 500$$ on a mod.

The claimed hp of 32 is at at the crank and if true would translate into 20 +hp.My L has a low end power problem that has to be diagnosed and fixed,otherwise i would be the guinea.

Windage trays are ordinarilly used in high rpm applications. I don't know if there would be any significant hp improvement with a motor that's turning under 6000 rpm.

I'd still like to see someone try it though............just for kicks.

Does the new pan have a higher oil capacity? Like was stated above, windage trays are generally useful in high rpm motors, but would be interesting to see on an L.

Yes,increased oil capacity without losing ground clearance.The cobra r has its peak hp at 6250 and tq at 4250 while are peaks are 4750 and 3250. Sure would be nice to get some tuner input on this.If we saw just half of the gains of the r,we should get 10+ rwhp. I just got off the phone with a tech guy from canton with some info.The #784 pan holds 6qts as apposed to are stock5in the pan.He said the lowest dyno # they have heard of on any modular motor is 18rwhp. He also said he had lightning customers raving about this product and that a guy in michigan ordered a second pan/tray.So who wants to be the guinea? matt

Just fill the oil pan to the half way mark on the dip-stick. If you fill it to full you will lose hp with the crank hitting the oil. I keep mine at half and dyno'd in at 355hp. (Cat's out of the bag!) The pan is not going to give you 18hp! I would ask for dyno data before spending the cash and tearing into the truck. I would guess if any gain at all would be 5-7hp.

Okay, I have the windage tray and 784 pan. The oil pickup is too long for the pan. Are you guys using the cobra R pick up tube? Is there something I am missing? The stock pan depth is about 6.5 inches while the canton measures an even 6. On a side note I did have to cut the windage tray for a better fit and bend the bracket which supports the pickup and connects to the main. I hope I can get this to fit. It looks as if the pan will work with the stock filter location...if you use a cm filter, the 820s is way too wide.
