Keypad/Handle Install Problem - Odd problem
Keypad/Handle Install Problem - Odd problem
I checked out all the threads online about the keyless entry keypad and handle install. It appeared to be a piece of cake.
I proceeded to remove my factory door handle and everything went smooth as can be until I went to install the new handle w/ keypad.
There are a set of couterweights on the new handle that interfere with a vertical beam inside the door. For the life of me I couldn't get it to fit correctly.
When I compared the two handles, I noticed the stock piece only had once counterweight and the assembley appeared to be cut to fit around that vertical beam in the door.
Did I get the wrong handle? Take a look at the pic that is attached. For those who have done this mod; did your handle's weights look the same?
This is very odd . . .
P/N for handle is XL1Z-7822405-BAK

Hey Wayne, what did you use as a reference when you ordered this truck, all F 150 doors have different handle setup for each truck, Reg cab, Ex cab, Screw......... I will look this up today for you and see what I can find out, I have a few loose handles around here and will see if they look like yours. Just hope you can return it if it is in fact the wrong handle since it is electrical.
Flash
that is the same part # that I used. I did mine in March and it did not have the counter balance. Another member did his recently and had the same problem. He removed the counter balance and handle works fine.

Flash,
I did mine about 18 months ago, it didn't have either of those counterweights, its just a flat piece of metal. I'd try and swap that piece with the one off the original door handle if I were you, if it is possible.

Flash. You are not going crazy. I had the same issue. You have to cut off one of the counterweights. It is a pain to do. I had a vertical bad saw but you have to be REAL carefull. Protect the paint on the handle and your fingers.
Hope this helps

I did my handle about 10 months ago and I don't remember seeing either of them weights. The part number that I used was XL1Z*7822405*BAJ and that was for a white handle. I hope it all works out for you.

Flash I had the same problem also and agree with Andy you'll need to grind off the two counter weights and trim a little then it'll work fine.

same **** here
When I went to install it I was ready to kill the dealer. They reordered and the same thing. I wound up grinding it off but you need to do it with care or you will mess up the paint. That extra weight hits the window channel and screws everything up.
Glad to see I wasn't the only one with this problem.
Good luck and next year there will be an exact replacement for this (except for the white guys)

Showya,
If there are indeed different handle setups, how can I distinguish between them? I only know of one part number.
For those who had to grind/cut,
What did you have to remove? Just the left counterweight or some of the metal plate too.
Thanks guys,
Wayne

exactly
the one weight and the metal plate it was mounted to. I tried to duplicate it to the stock one. It works great now but I was in a hurry to install it thinking it would take 30 minutes. It took 30 minutes just to modify the handle. You will get it
Thanks got hp . . .
I don't really want to have cut this piece. I'm going to see if I can locate a handle that has the stock weight configuration first. If all else fails I'll bust out the hack-saw. =)

Keypad Install
I to found that ford has evidently made a design change to the keyless entry door handle, however, if you file off the rivet that holds the counter weight bracket off the keyless door handle and the stock door handle you can swap them and reinstall them with a small bolt and nut. Took about 5 to 10 minutes to do both with a good file. I did my 2001 Lightning that way and the rest of the proceedure when perfect. If you look at the new handle carefully, you will see that only the one rivet hold on the bracket.
Hope the info helps anyone making this modification.
