Level 10 (or other) Springs
Level 10 (or other) Springs
All,
I've got the JDM line mod valve (which from all that I've read is actually the Level 10 piece) and the shifts are definately harder at WOT but still relatively "tame" at partial throttle. Does anyone know if you can purchase the Level 10 springs separately and, if so, will these along with the current line mod valve make my shifts even more firm. I am looking for shifts that are firm at partial throttle and hard at WOT. I know JL sells the line mod valve and PSP has the Factory_Tech accumulator but I cannot find anyone that sells just the springs (and I certainly don't want to spend $150 to buy the full Level 10 kit just for the springs).
Any help is greatly appreciated.

lightningbolt,
Currently I only have 900 miles on my L (it's driven less than 70 miles/week) and I don't want to start adding mods (chips, etc.) until I get to the 1,500-2,000 mile mark. I want to make sure this thing is nice and broken in so I can get a true idea of what it does stock versus modded. I am going to have it dyno'ed every step of the way so I will know what has worked and what hasn't. I also want to firm up the shifts through mechanical means rather than via a chip. The chip may firm up the shifts so they feel exactly like a tranny that has a shift kit in it but I don't think it will help with tranny life like a shift kit will (harder shifts - less wear on clutches, prolonged fluid life, etc). If I can keep my existing line mod valve and further firm up the shifts via a chip AND save additional wear and tear on the tranny I'm all for it (the last thing I want to do is drop the tranny pan again). Thus far I'm not convinced I can have it both ways.

Level 10 springs
I would wait until you purchase a chip before taking the trans apart again. I put in the level 10 shift kit in and only had a superchip and filter. The chip was purchased first so it was not burned for the shift kit. This made the truck churp the tires at 3/4 throttle and smoke them at full. I have driven the truck without the chip and it is almost like not having the shift kit in. Recently I purchased the JL 3# pulley, 90mm, and a JL Diablo chip. The chip was burned with the stock line pressures. Let me tell you it still was too hard at full throttle. JL told me it looked like I slowed down going down the 1/4. I think it was from the tires breaking loose shifting in to 2nd. (I am currently running stock F1s with over 24,000 miles on them) Recently the I took the springs out. Now it seems a little soft at full throttle but churps the tires at 3/4 throttle most of the time. I am sending the chip back to JL to have him bump up the line pressure as it now feels like the trans is slipping at full throttle. So from my experience I would say do the line mod and have the chip bump up the line pressure some. When you put a chip in with even the stock line pressure you will notice a difference in shift firmness. Because the factory computer settings does something (drops cylinders or something) and the chip removes this (unless you tell them not to). Most chip makers will modify the program to suit the way you want your L to run and most without much cost (except Superchip, they wanted $135 to reburn my chip. That is one of the reasons I purchased JL's Diablo)
Before anyone asks, No the springs are not for sale. My father has a 95 L with a 8# Vortec, Ford mass air and some other goodies. Now for him to race me he needs a shift kit because he does not want to break the trans. So I will be putting the springs and the smaller accumulator valve in his truck.
