Unhappy Intercooler Leak

Well it took me a little longer than alot of you guys, but now at 12 almost 13 thousand it's leaking. I noticed the coolant was down below the cold fill line when the motor was plenty warm. My question is when I fill it back up to where it should be do I use straight antifreeze or do I make a 50/50 mix like in the radiator? Another thing is when I take it in to be fixed is there anything I can tell them that will help them get it fixed & back home with me. Thanks for any help. Sam

Take the truck to the dealer..... Tell them to look up campaign #01B81 for the IC issue. It's very new, so they may not be aware of it.

1BADL,

Having been through TWO intercoolers personally, here are my suggestions:

1. go here http://nloc.org/ubb/Forum2/HTML/002375.html and print the photos from the thread.

2. When you take the your truck in, emphasize under no circumstances are they to use ANY other part number than the one listed on the thread. Otherwise, you will more than likely receive another defective unit.

3. If they give you ANY flack, instruct them to contact SVT and speak to Jake Doss.

4. Unless you have a mod-friendly dealer, remove all go-faster goodies (chip/filter/pulley if applicable), leave the battery disconnected overnight, and reconnect in the morning.

5. inspect the invoice to ENSURE they used the proper part listed on the thread above.

6. Dont take any dookie from some so-called "expert" service manager.

Owners on this board know a whole hell of a lot more about these vehicles than 95% of all Cooter and Gomer dealerships, SVT "certified" or not.

Good luck.

Sam & Shorty,

If you are having problems with local dealers and want to ensure its done right, look up SuperFords here on the board. He works at a Richmond area Ford Dealer, is a fellow L owner and may not mind the mods......

Its a drive, but it may be well worth it!!!!

Question

Thanks for the help & info. I knew you guys would know & help. I still have one question(even though it might be kind of a stupid one). Do you mix the antifreeze with water or just use it straight? I kinda think it's a mix after reading the thread from NLOC. Just want to make sure before I do anything. Thanks again. Sam

I have the sweet exhaust smell again. I can just about set my watch by the IC leak beginning. 13,500 the first time, and now 13,600 the second time. At least now they have the permanent fix. I will ask the dealer to have the parts on thand before disassembly this time. Last time it took 11 days.

My truck has been in dealer since Tuesday getting the leak fixed, and they still dont have replacement part. I call them each day to get the latest lie.

Never use str8 antifreeze in anything. Antifreeze will actually inhibit cooling to an extent. Of all places you do not want str8 antifreeze in your intercooler, nor in our radiator/motor.

A 67% distilled water (void of harsh minerals) / 33% propylene glycol (gotta be animal friendly remember!) and a bottle of Water Wetter (anymore than 1 in the intercooler and 2 in the motor will gain you no benefits per Redline tech experts) will work best for IC and radiator/motor. If you must go by the manufacturer's recommendation then use 50/50, but do not go any higher. You'll run cooler at the 67/33 ratio, though.

Hey Sam. Sorry to hear the news. I think mine may be starting to leak also. The last time I looked at it I was wearing beer goggles so I'm going to mark the tank today.

Hey Fast as L, I see you have an exhaust rattle. I took mine in for a fix but I think it's starting up again. What the heck is it? Is it in or on the mufflers? "Cause I'll just use that as an excuse to get a Magnaflow.

It's hard to explain. It only happens when there are three adults in the cab. It's not actually a rattle but more of a harmonic resonance. What I believe is happening is due to the extra weight in the cab, the exhaust is touching the under carriage somewhere and the harmonics start. It happens at all speeds but is not continuous. You can really feel it in the drivers seat. It is also very audible. Somewhere, here I believe, I read that it's a loose exhaust system and just needs to tightened up. I took it in five weeks ago for this problem and the "clunk" TSB. They performed the TSB but it didn't work. They ordered a new lower control arm which I'm STILL waiting for. They didn't check the exhaust. They said they would do it when they replaced the control arm. The service writer told me that if I wanted to carry that many people in the cab, I should have bought an F250. Nice reply huh?

Sam, sorry to hear about your leak It will happen to all of us, except you '01 owners!!

I have 11,900 miles on her and no leak yet!!!! I just checked it matter of fact and it is still at the magic marker line I put on the I/C tank a month ago. I already have plans to where she will be going for the fix.
