Question about air/fuel gauges
I am thinking about hooking up my own gauges in my truck. My question is: How long did it take to hook up the air/fuel gauge. It looks like it will take a while. How did do you hook it up to the computer connecter without shorting other pins? Or can you wire directly to the O2 sensors?
I would like a detailed description of installation for this gauge!!

i hooked mine up to the (signal) black lead on the front left hand side o2 sensor i ran a wire down through the rubber brake grommet and picked up the switched 12v off of the radio switched 12v
Ditto...
I have the Autometer Phantom electric 270 degree sweep Air/Fuel Gauge (the same as shown in the pics WHAT04 posted a while back), and the hook up was pretty simple.
I/we/John893 ran the signal wire from the gauge through the grommet in the drivers side firewall used for the stock boost gauge, taped it along the engine side fire wall (so it wouldn't hit anything hot and melt), and connected it to one of the 4 wires on the front drivers side O2 sensor (I believe black was the correct color...but search back through previous posts to make sure).
Anger Management Tip #1: Save yourself the hassle of trying to splice into this wire while lying on your back underneath your truck by going to your local Walmart (or equivalent) and spending a whopping two bucks on those plastic clip-in style wire spice deals (no idea what else to call them). This is the key to saving yourself lots of time, and hair in the process.
Then you just need power for the gauge (which doesn't illuminate green like the other phantom gauges by the way...but does put on one hell of a light show though), which trusty ol' John893 managed to hook into my 12v stereo power wire like 2_FAST4U said.
Then I/we/John893 just connected it to the common ground wire we ran for all 3 of the peas...i mean gauges in my pod, and we were done.
Then we had to do his truck.
Hope this helps.
later...

Don't put an Air/fuel gauge in
Air/Fuel gauges are not accurate at all. Factory oxygen sensors look at a very narrow range of ratios right around stochimetric, which is 14.7:1. All an Air/Fuel gauge will tell you is if you are richer than stoch or leaner than stoch. These gauges cannot be used for tuning. Get one if you like to watch pretty lights go on and off, but don't get one for any performance purpose.
Air/Fuel gauges can be accurate if they are used with a $1000+ wide band 02 sensor.
