Problem with shifting at lower rpms?

After looking at that I sort of wonder what the problem would be if you had your shifts set low so that you didn't overspin your S/C? I mean this truck makes it highest torque value below 3000 rpm so wouldn't letting her shift early put you at a lower rpm for the next gear in the meat of the "torque" band? I just don't want to overspin my S/C, I was thinking of setting the shifts to 52-5300 just to be a little safer using the JL 3# pulley. Just a thought, anyone want to explain this to me? Thanks.

What I really meant was is their a performance loss in lowering the shift points?

JL told me that whatever chip it was it most likely needed a reburn - check with JDM (I'm gonna have to do the same thing with my JDM chip).

I think Speedin' Bob had his chip set to shift at lower RPM's so as not to overspin the blower. Speedin' Bob am I right? I also asked JL to set my Diablo chip to do the same thing.

Hilander,

I've still got the email in my Outlook that he said 380 and 398 with both of his pulleys!

I talked with Jim@JDM at FFW in Bristol, and he stated that if you are running his chip with his pulley you do not need a reburn.

Buuuuubba,

Where you been hiding? Missed you. Club keeping you hopping?

Seriously, good post.

I created an Excel Spreadsheat that will allow you to input various diameters, shift points, and see real time changes to Blower RPM. Nice tool when your on the phone with your tuner.

I'm more than happy to forward it along to interested parties.

Lightningbolt,

Not sure what you mean about both pullys. Is it 380 with the upper & 398 with a lower pulley too? I know the truck, he lives close by. The 369 figure is what he told me a month ago. I even saw the dyno chart. Not disputing what you are saying just trying to get all the details straight

Hilander,

Yes - two trucks involved here. first truck is the white truck with the bottom of the airbox removed/JBA headers/upper pulley; his email said this truck dyno'd rear wheel HP @ 380.

The red truck has an upper and lower pulley (though his lower pulley isn't for sale just yet) and this truck dyno'd 398 rear wheel HP.

Hey GK...no prob as I enjoy doing things like this for you all

The measurements are at the TOP of the grooves, where you SHOULD measure...the correct measurement. You do not want your belt too thick as it will not seat right and cause slippage. Almost all pulleys are designed w/ the grooves a tad deeper than the belt is thick...this way it will grip better and not slip.

JDM measured his pulley at 7.8 which was at the bottom of the grooves, so I had someone back that up and then give me their measurement at the top of it, which was .1 higher. Anyhoo, all the measurements I posted is at the top of the grooves.

Actually, you want this truck to shift as high as possible safely. 5500 is a good point, but 5600 is even better and I feel totally safe, as most tuner's would agree.

Here, read this and you'll understand why:

If you recall from our mails LB, this is exactly why I hate quoting numbers - they're just claims and they vary enough truck-to-truck, person-to-person that one or two are not a good measure of a particular part's performance potential. The red truck (the more modified of the two) actually made LESS power on a AG pull (All Gear) after we installed the torque converter. My point being, we make a good product with the latest equipment and best data, and it should be judged on its merrits not one particular truck. I'll take a satisfied customers testimonial over a graph any day. Chances are if you cruise this board often you will buy one of the "big two," and that's fine. We don't race our trucks, we drive them. Until I bought my L, trucks were for hauling 408's and rear-end housings from the race shop to the warehouse. We live, we learn... we make new parts. We only sell the upper pulley and the idlers for now... but more is on the way. I think from now on, as a manufactuer, I would prefer our products not be viewed in terms of a single truck or dyno pull but as backed by a company that is willing to help each and every enthusiest realize the potential of their performance vehicle. Oh, and if you really want a carbon fiber hood, we can build it....
