Question Top Speed

I was wondering if the lightning could go any faster then the posted 142mph (stock 2001).
If you had 100 miles of perfectly flat road (average temp. and no wind) and you gave it all its got, do you think that it would go any faster? If so how fast

It can be done

I know their was an old post of someone getting clocked at 158, not sure of their mods. I personally hit 140 in a little over a mile and she was still pulling strong. I am sure 150 isn't out of the question.

Funny you should ask, Just yesterday I took her out for a spin and found a nice long quite stretch of road. I had the speedo pegged, guessing 145mph and the tach was at about 4500-4600 rpm. It was still pulling strong and I would guess that I could have hit 155.

I have a chip and filter and bassani exhaust.

I hope that helps.

Damn, and I thought I was moving fast in my 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS at 137 MPH! It still had plenty more, but like FRITZ said, my butt felt sorta funny when I saw that semi about a mile ahead moving in fast.

Speed?

I can personally say it will do more than 140 with no mods. But with a few have been clocked at 168 on a GPS and radared at 157.Here is are radar stations at one of the events that I do.That should give you an idea.Stan

I've had mine past the 140 speedo a few times and she still moves hard, the trick is to hit the Nitrous when you top out. Thats fun.

RUSLOW: that is some ccol pictures on that link you posted. The L sure did keep up good with the rest of those corvette's, HAHAHAHA. Do they make you guys duct tape the front end of the cars, thats what it kinda looked like on there. I wish we had something like that by me!

Go to http://www.openroadracing.com/Gamble...esults/gsd.htm and check out Stan Rogers' trap speeds. He won his class, btw. However, his truck is highly modded and is capable of running much faster, over 160 probably. (Darn, he beat me to it). If you want to be accurate you need to use a GPS, or even better, clock your time over a measured distance, speedometers are too unreliable at those speeds, and I don't think the Auto Club will calibrate it for you. You need to run both directions, unless you just want to find a road with a big tailwind so you can brag. The 3.55 gears in the '00s are not well suited for top end, you hit the aerodynamic wall before the motor gets to the fat part of the power band. I think the 3.73s are probably better, but that's one reason I went to the 4.10s, if you plot the power curve against rpm and speed theoretically you should have a better top end as well as launch. One of these days, after I get the new motor broken in, I'll take it to the desert and give it a try. The down side, of course, is gas milage and engine wear.

Exclamation

No I duct tape it so that I don't have to worry about the hood flying open at speed[would be VERY nasty]and also to smooth some of the edges off anything to help aerodynamicly[sp].Oh and by the way it is not around here I live in Ark and it is held in NV.So I travel and distance to compete in them.Stan

um?

For a Stock 99 I have one of the highest RWHP at 330 RWHP. I can hit 130 pretty fast but it inches up to 140 and dies.

I don't see how a stock 99-00 can do much more that 142 without driving over a cliff. BTW I tear the upper windsheild gasket every time (+135) as it beats the top of the cab.

BTW the 158 I beleave was done in Houston with a 150lb shot of NOS, so it takes 150 more HP to go 16mph faster, not a normal feat for a stock L.

I pegged the speedometer on a lone strip of highway in the desert in my 00 when it had 4000 miles, bone stock with crappy 92 octane CA gas, and I chickened out and let off but I still had pedal left...no cliffs around

This smells fishy.

Everytime I've done a top gear run the plastic pedal is mashed in the floor.

Still had pedal you say, um that's not a top gear run.

That would be like me saying that I was tooling around at 137 mph and decided to floor it, again BS flag.

's possible, Dark Horse, sometimes you get some real good tail winds out there in the desert. I just say its not valid unless you make a two way run.

alphadoggy,

I’m not trying to be troublesome about this subject. I’ve just drove/dynoed this truck enough to know that when your dyno puller drops a load in his pants every time you make a pull in a large metropolitan area, you basically know what your dealing with.

The only fault I can see in my theory is that I always run 30 psi and maybe that is my handy cap in a top gear run?

All else being said, I have a fairly strong runner here, so for people to say that they pull 140 like a breeze is either a Speedo fault or a lot of bravado. At 130 it runs pretty nice at 140 you can’t hear yourself even think it’s so loud. Funny no one else mentions how loud it is at 140 but everyone and their dog apparently does it.

dark_horse,

I'll be honest here. I've had mine to 130 and I started puckering. I put my Vette in a culvert after I lost control of it in a curve at that speed back in '85. My L had about 5k on it last year and was totally stock at the time when I did the 130 thing. I was amazed at how fast 130 arrived, but it seemed to lag somewhat after 130 so I let up because I was getting "pucker factor" on a 2 lane road. It dynoed stock at 332 HP. Now I'm pretty sure it would hit 150 because 130 comes so much faster, but I don't dare try 150 on tires with 14.5 k on them. It's amazing to me how much difference 10 mph makes at those speeds....
