Question Gearshift **** disassembly

Anyone know how to get to the switch that controls O/D lockout without tearing it up? I think either my wiring is broken or the switch is bad because the light won't light and the tranny won't lock out anymore.

Additionally, my rubber boot at the base of the lever has split open. I guess it's from all the lowering and raising of the column every time I drive it. If I could get the shifter **** off, I could fix both problems. I tried "search", but it turned up nothing. Somebody did this, but I can't remember who. Ruslow maybe??

Thanks,
Jim

gforce, funny you should mention this. Mine failed the other day.

The switch is held in by the ring on the outside. I put my fingernail in the area where it seats against the shifter and applied a little outward pressure. The ring and switch popped out and landed on the floor. There is no wiring to deal with, just two contacts.

I fixed mine in the parking lot of the dealer.

Jay,

Elaborate, please!! I REALLY don't want to drop it off and have something else ruined. How did yours fail? Same way? What was wrong with the switch if that's what it was?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

Jim, mine feels like the switch spring broke. The button was almost all the way in. When I would hit a bump, the OD would engage , then disengage quickly (the light would flash on and off).

I have heard of other switch failures, so we are not alone.

The little black ring with the "off" lense just pops off. It is held by little plastic tabs. When I popped mine off, there was no damage, so I just pushed it back on.

Uh, oh!! No spring breakage here. It just won't work period. But thanks for the quick reply - I'm going outside now to test the contacts and look for broken wiring. At least I can get the end cap off now. Thanks, Jay.

Anyone know how to get the whole shift **** off or how to replace the rubber shift boot??

Thanks,
Jim

Angry

Ok, now I'm upset. Really upset. This is minor stuff or at least it should be. My switch came right out thanks to Jay Lincoln and tested just fine according to my meter. Even the little light and capacitor. And even the wiring down into the column after I tore what remained of my boot off since it was split anyway. So, I thought I'd check the fuses, which required a quick look into the owner's manual. Nope, no fuse for the O/D lockout switch. At least I didn't see one.

So, I guess THEY finally get their grubby hands on it afterall. If I wasn't afraid of the airbag going off in my face during the steering wheel removal, I'd still do it myself. Or will it? Apparently, the plastic steering column can't be removed until the ignition key lock is, which means the steering wheel comes off before anything does....aaargghhh!!!! Any suggestions?? Don't say the dealer or warranty words. Now it's pride, lol.

Jim, I don't think that I would attempt to remove the steering wheel without a Service manual.

You've got mail.
