Overdrive
After lurking here for several weeks I finally got a Black 2001 L, which may or may not be the fastest color, but it is definately the meanest looking color
Anyway I am new to this whole automatic tranny thing. Could someone explain the overdrive function? Should I disable it when I want to push the boundries? To me it seems like an extra gear, makes the engine rev lower but how does it affect the tranny performance from a dead stop? I posted a page here: http://www.azrockcrawler.com/_images...lightning.html , it details how I aquired my used Lightning along with a few pictures. My first mod is to beef up the stock stereo. I plan on putting a JL Audio 8.2 microsub in back and a Kicker 5x7 component set up front, toss in a couple amps and an EQX for signal proccessing. I'll post pictures as I go.

For drag racing you will probably get 2 different opinions, but here is mine. I don't bother turning OD off for the 1/4 mile. My truck doesn't shift out of third so why turn it off. Other people say it runs faster in the 1/4 mile with it off, but I never saw a difference. When I road race I leave the OD off because it helps in braking. If you ever road race you will notice the brakes heating up, so by leaving the OD off it helps slow the truck down at the end of the straight aways. You just have to make sure you don't go over 125 mph or your engine will shut off if you are in third gear. The only other time I turn it off is if I'm doing around 40 for a long stretch and I feel it shifting back and forth between 3rd and fourth.

The transmission in our trucks is a 4 r 100, which stands for 4 speed, that has a torque capacity of 1000#'s. With the overdrive button off the transmission will be the same as with it on except for the fact it will not shift into fourth gear, a good time to use this is in hilly areas when the tranny will be shifting from 3 to fourth and back again repeatedly. At the drag strip, or on the dyno, its a good idea to turn the overdrive off, so it won't shift into overdrive prematurely. Hope this helps a bit.
