Shift kit question (mixing kits?)
Shift kit question (mixing kits?)
I currently have the Factory_Tech shift kit with a JDM chip. I thought with this setup the tires would bark during the 1-2 shift Both my friend's truck with the same setup and mine do not bark during the shift. Would it be possible or a good idea to ad the JDM line mod valve to my current setup. I want to leave the springs from the Factory_Tech kit and just ad the line mod valve from JDM. Is this a bad idea and could this cause problems? Another guy I know has the JDM chip and line mod valve and his truck barks second gear every time.
Thanks for any help

Don't take this the wrong way, hard shifting might make you quicker but it will take it's toll. I am not knocking anybody's products, just warning you that all that hard shifting is gonna break stuff. Start saving now to fix the trans, u-joints, etc.

well.....you would think so, but hard shifting is better for the tranny that soft shifts because on a soft shift the pads wear out a lot quicker that hard shifts. Our tranny will do ok with the hard shifts. On my old S-10 I had a B&M shift kit in it and the shifts were wild, and I drove it with that kit in it for five years before I sold it and the guy who has it now still has not had any problems.
I sold the truck three years ago. It is all on how you drive it

My truck with the F-T trans kit and a PSP chip does not bark the tires at the 1-2 shift...it burns them at WFO! I have had a few pucker moments when it shifts from first to second in a turn.

I have the Level 10 w/ the JL Diablo chip and mine rips the tires loose when it shifts. Even after the converter, which normally softens shift, it still rips. I have heard others say that just the Diablo Line Valve Mod and Diablo chip breaks 'em loose.
Why would anyone want to burn the tires on a shift.
To me I would rather just dig in and go. Maybe an occasional bark.

One thing I noticed while doing a side-by-side run at 60mph with my buddy who had a 01 GT is that with each shift I would jump 3-4 feet ahead instantly. And that was before I had any shifting mods. I can only guess what it would do now as the speedo jumps almost 10 mph with each shift. For example, the shift at 40 mph from 1st to 2nd just catapults the truck past the 50 mph mark and lands it on 60 mph. (Must be the springs winding up some and then flinging the truck forward) And the 2-3 shift at 80 mph lands it at darn near 100 mph. That's why.
Plus, it is just cool as h*ll to be able to do this on demand when somebody asks if it "gets rubber." Additionally, it shifts almost like stock unless you stab it.Jim

I don't get why my friend and I don't get the second gear bark! The question at hand is will the JDM line mod valve work in my truck with the Factory_Tech shift kit already installed? If so I am going to try that to see if that will give me the second gear bark.
I want the tires to bark because it is cool! No other reason, I don't care if I lose a .10 in the 1/4, the sound will more then make up for it!

gforce - I understand that, I wouldn't mind having the tires bark either. What I meant was I wouldn't want the tires to break loose on shift, that means less traction, less going faster. Barking no problem.

If you want firmer shifts then I would give Jim a call, tell him what you want he can tune your chip to shift harder, or do what ever you want.
I wouldn't mix kits, yopu have no idea what the combo might do. If Jims line mod will give you better shifts than factory techs, swap them out, or find a kit that will do what you want. Stay with components that are tested to work together.

Riiiiiiiight...
I'm not saying that I don't believe those of you that claim to "burn the tires off at the 1-2 shift, and consistantly chirp the 2-3"....but unless the first number on your best timeslip is a 12 (and mid at that)...then I'm sorry, but I do.
Maybe I'm just skeptical because my friends truck will only occasionally grab 2nd (there's definitely no "burning of tires")...and even that only happens downhill with a tailwind if you know what I mean. I would be verrrrrry interested to see an video of anyone with just a chip, filter, shift kit smoking Goodyear's "finest" (subject to opinion of course) into dual 50-foot slabs on a well paved street while shifting from 1st to 2nd at 45mph.
Edit: How many of you that claimed this have a lower pulley too...then i *might* be more inclined to believe you...but i'd still like to see a video. no offense, you understand. later...

Well, as for shift kits , I don't know.
I don't have one and probably won't.
Why, When I hit second at full throttle, it spins the tires hard. I have a 2001 with 1300 miles on it and stock tires.
I have the psp filter, 4 way chip, and the full bassani exhaust. That is all for engine mods and the tire spinning I am talking about is on the street program.
If I had the knowledge and tools, I would post a video of my truck doing it. I have done it on several different peices of road around town and the best seems to be on the concrete patches of road.
I don't know if I am the exception, but I do not see the reason for me to do a shift kit when the tires can't hold on now.
Also I too have had some scarry moments on slight turns when the truck hits second and tries to come around on me.
Hopefully someone with more video and computer knowledge than me can show you a video.
My 2 cents

I'm not a very smart person and I'll readily admit it, but I don't understand that paragraph after re-reading it several times. I don't know if mine will do 12's or not, but I think it will after seeing that my dyno #'s are in line with those that are in the 12's.
Anyway, on certain pavements, mine will LOUDLY squall (not bark) the tires on not only the 1-2, but the 2-3 in the street mode of my chip. In the race mode, it's downright crazy and almost dangerous on the street. It will even bark the 3-4 shift. I'll see if I can get it on tape. It's FUN!!
Captain,
Understood.
On old pavement mine will light em up between first and second. On newer pavement it will spin them (at WFO) for two to four seconds. My truck with chip, filter, trans. kit, and lower pulley has never (on dry roads) spun the tires between second and third!
