Need advice on refilling Transmission

Gang,

I plan on installing a line mod valve install within the next week or so and have talked to some fellow board members, did an exhaustive search , yet still have questions regarding the proper way to refill the transmission and converter as they will both be drained.

This is my first experience with completely draining a transmission and I want it to be a positive event by eliminating visits from Mr. Murphy (Murphy's Law).

Therefore, my questions are:

What is the best way to make sure the converter is adequately filled prior to starting the vehicle?

Do I fill the tranny to the full line, let it set, check it again, fill again, start the engine with the tranny in Neutral, let it settle, check again, then and add fluid as necessary until full?

Any tips would be most appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

The best advice I can give you is to just use a wide-mouth funnel in the dipstick tube and go slowly with the refill. In other words, just pay attention, like I know you will. I just did the line valve last week and re-used the stock pan. (for now) Anyway, I poured slowly and stopped at 6 qts, (looked like that was a little less than how much came out) so as not to overfill it. I started it and applied the parking brake and just kept going back and forth thru the gears in the driveway a few times. Everything acted just fine, so I checked the fluid and it was in an acceptable range. So I drove it about 20 miles and checked it again. I wound up adding another 1/2 qt, for a grand total of 6 1/2 qts. This put mine at the top of full. I had bought 8 qts just to be sure I had enough.

Strangely, my factory fill was WAY above that when hot. Not good. I've put about 500 miles on mine since the valve and all is well. In fact, it's the best my tranny has ever been. I don't think I need a new one afterall and I can even get a small chirp going into overdrive in the race mode, not to mention the other gears...it's a blast, especially at lights next to punks. It has to make them think twice about trying me.

??

Why drain the converter? I added the modulator valve to mine and saw no reason to drain the converter.

I did replace my pan with the 4X4 pan. Will make next time draining the transmission much easier. Remember you can reuse your old gasket.

Good luck and enjoy!!!!

As long as your draining the converter put Mercron V (synthetic) in it. Thats whats in mine. Runs great.
Yea, fill it, run it put some more in run it and fill to add line. Let it warm up as it will expand, don't top off until its at operating temp.

Should hold about 17-18 quarts if you drain the converter.

Speedin

I will check if it's OK tomorrow, and let you know.

Do you know about when you want to do it, and how long it will take?

I got a bike about a month ago, so I have a full face helmet for the ride. I hope you don't need to slow down as fast this time.

ole,

probably 3 hours (allowing time for the tranny to cool, breakfast, install). If the "man in the big brown truck" arrives this week with the pan and filter, I'd like to tackle it a week from saturday (Aug 11) in the morning.

scout us a "test location" for post install test blast.

Cool

The boss said OK. But can't start till 1:00PM on Sat. We are open till then, so we can't have the lift before 1:00PM.

Give me a call and we can set it up.

Seems like the EPA would mandate a drain plug on tranny pans. every DIYer that ever installed a shift kit, put maybe what,, a gallon or so, of tranny fluid back to mother earth. the last one i did, my wife saw my "bloody arms" and thought the truck fell on me. So good luck der Speedy, the lift will be a godsend. if you shift back and forth from drive to reverse "gently", it helps to refill the convertor before your first test drive, then get ready to add a few qts more ( as most have already said) piece of cake
