Why Are The Gen1's So Much Slower Than The Gen2's?

When I was at WFC, I noticed several Gen1 trucks with crate motors and various blowers and nitrous systems. I figured since they added a power adder that they would run similar times to the stock or slightly modded Gen2's. To my amazement most of the Gen1's couldn't get out of the 14's. I just figured that a Gen1 with a power adder should be in the 13's. Any idea's?

hmmm

If they did have a stroker motor or blower or NOS on there trucks, and did not run better than 14s there was something very wrong.
The group I was with in GEN1s at WFC where running strong.
Shane L. has run almost a 13flat with just a Vortec.
Dave P has run 11.7s with just 6 pounds of boost.
With a small blower a GEN1 should run just as good as a GEN2.If not something is wrong.Later

Yeah the 351 Windsor is a pretty good start for performance mods, there is a lot more stuff out there for the Windsors after 40 years of production than the modular engines. Not to say there isn't stuff for the modulars, because there is, just that people have been hot rodding the Windsors forever.

I agree with Lightning 1.Putting a Vortech with upgraded fuel and exhaust should EASILY net 13's or even better even with warm air. 1st gen L's are conservatively rated(about 15 h.p. under than what they really are) with their gear and a s/c they usually are slightly quicker than 2nd gen L's. ( I own both)

My Gen1 was not that slow...

I had a '94 Gen1 and it was not that slow. With some killer heads, mild cam, Mass Air conversion and good set of headers ran a best at the FFW in Ennis in '95 13.10 at 105 on the engine only no power adder. Would have broke into the high 12s if I didn't lose traction mid track. At the time couldn't afford slicks and was running on stock tires. Ran mid to low 13s all the time.

We won the Lightning event. There was approximately 10 Lightnings we went through. Even the "modified" one with a Vortec could only manage a 14.10. He won his class cause he was the only modified Lightning at the track that night. I wanted to grudge race him at the end for his trophy but he wouldn't have anything do with it.

If you really want to go fast --- It would have to be a Gen 1 --- How many Gen2s have you seen in the 10s --- an number of Gen 1s have been there done that --- While I have a Gen2, If I really wanted to go fast I would opt for the Gen1 --- There are many speed parts for the 351W and the E4OD transmission --- but next to none for the 5.4 --- Just try to find a pair of aluminum rockers for a 5.4 or pistons, or cams, etc
