Question Fiber Optics Question

Hey all

I am doing a little project, and am looking to add some fiber optics or maybee some neon to finish the project.

If anyone has any experiance or links they couls pass along I would appreciate it.

Once I finish the project I will post some pics, I bet you all will be surprised.

Don't ask me what it is because it is a secret until I am done and ready to post some pics.

Depends on what you want to do. Is it for looks, stereo applications (mine using fiber optics instead of RCA cables = Alpine Ai-Net System = $$$$), or something else?

Fiber is easy to work with, comes in lots of strand widths, multiple strand "cables" and the color is just a matter of the color of the light source.

You should be able to find some fiber strands in a couple of industry catalogs. Check with Radio Shack to see if they can get some. Computer stores that service LAN, Ethernet, etc. that use Fiber Switches should be able to get some. Electrical Supply houses (Grainger, Cameron and Barkley, etc. etc. should be able to order it as well. The cable is not very expensive if you don't need connectors, polishing kits for the ends to make connections, etc.

Start with the industrial electrical supply houses, they are your best bet.

Fiber is easy to get, but what do you want to do with it? It's generally housed in a thick plastic sheild to protect it. The actual fiber itself is generally not as thick as fishing line. Then you have to put polished ends on it to prodcast down it, and you need either a led or laser to fire down it...

I would look into neon...

Just my $.02

Actually the light will only be visible at the ends. Unless to scruff the outside it will remain clear. It's not like neon where you see a lit tube.
