Ever Ride In The Bed?
Ever Ride In The Bed?
Gang:
Back when I was a young'un, we (my brothers and I) used to ride around in the bed of my father's rust-bucket 1976 Chevy Custom Deluxe all of the time. It wasn't a big deal - that's just where you rode, anywhere from a trip to Granny's house to a 20-mile ride to the lumber yard (small town). It wasn't just us - everybody did it.
You don't see that too much any more (damn safety awareness!), but every once in a while you see some folks tooling around with somebody in the bed.
My question to you - have any of you been brave/stupid enough to ride in the bed of the Lightning, especially at speed? What was that like? I ask, because you won't ever see my azz back there, I can tell you that.
Just curious, and I can almost guarantee that there's a funny story about to pop up on this thread - soon. Let's hear about it.

Interesting point, and now you've got me thinking...
How about bolting down a recaro racing seat or something similar to the center of the bed, waaaay back by the tailgate. Include a 5-point harness and the works. A small speedo/tach on the armrest would complete the ensemble. How damn scary would that be?
I'm always looking for ways to increase the "fear factor" for passengers (typically the wife). Wow! You really have me thinking on this one...

If your going to do that put a fake steering wheel back there and have the driver sit as low as possible in the driver's seat so people think the person in the bed is driving! LOL
You know someone would believe it! LOL

National Mustang ***. weekend...
It was held at the Silver Dollar Raceway back in April. It was my first time ever at a drag strip. I had been posting/reading this site(and others) for a few months as I wrestled with one of THE questions: Should I get a new L? I had read that there would be some Ls at this event and since it was only about 25 miles from our home, I decided to drop by Sat.
The first person that I met was Johnny Lightning and then his wife, Sue. Man! I was impressed. His L was a sleek, black beauty. Talking with them and watching Johnny and other L owners scortch the 1/4 mile up, I decided then and there to get a L. I bot mine on May 8, 2001.
Oh yeah, "ridin' in the bed". Does sittin' on the tailgate count? J & S were set up about 2-300 yds. from the staging lanes. It was time to line up and JL asked if I wanted to ride along---hell yes! He was trying to keep the intake 'cool' after iceing it down, so he coasted/bumped the starter most of the way. No, it wasn't 'fast', but I had a good time.

I've had lots of people ride in the back of my truck. All at once too!
One time I was at a club with my buddy jim and we met these four girls and these two guys. Well the four girls where single and they didn't date these two guys but we still had to bring them allong. Well they didn't have a ride so I gave them a ride home in the back of the lightning, with the bed cover closed!!! On the highway doing about 70MPH. I had the 4 girls in the cab with me (they where tiny) and the 3 guys where in the back. Its probably about the stupidest thing I have ever done with the truck, but I had fun with two girls that night!!!

I've also had a few people in the back of my truck. In Alberta it's legal to have people in the back as long as there sitting up against the cab. Well thats what my buddies tell me when i'm drivin.
