Surprised an SS tonight

Well i read all the stories on here about the SS Camaro whippins on here and didnt really believe them until tonight. Was driving down a 2 lane road tonight and a white 98-99 Camaro SS pulls out of a subdivision in front of me. Get to the next light and im right in back of him. Well he decides to gas it and so I see him start to pull me so i put it to the floor (first time) and pull really freakin hard through first. As I hit second I see a big and I mean big puff of carbon come out his dual exhaust. This is when I slowly start to catch him and have to back off the throttle. We go up to 60 and he backs off (in defeat) and waves his hand out the window to say nice go i guess. lol.

Good whoopin' man! I have raced 3 personally (1 6spd and 2 autos) and waxed them. Beat the 6 spd by 3-4 lengths up to 95 mph. Got him off the line and it was over.

Good kill, but I have a hard time believing a stock L will kill a 98 or 99 SS(I am assuming your L is stock) based on my personal experiences. I have a 2000 WS6 T/A and a 2000 L and my T/A is much faster in the 1/4 mile then my L, both in stock form. Best I've run in the L is 13.9 and the best I have run in the T/A is 13.6 in th 1/4 mile.(These times are this summer). I have run my L against several LT1 f-bodies who are local club members and have killed them all, but not the LS1 guys. So, if it was an LT1 then I can understand, but not a LS1. No flames intended.

Nice kill.

Now you must consecrate the victory and mark your territory with two long blackmarks in front of where he pulled out. He'll know who it was. About the time they fade away is your queue to spank him again....

Hey Cliff,

I hate to dissappoint you, but the best I've run in my L is 13.4 (in stock form). So I guess it's not so hard to believe.

When the supercharger whines, so does the competition

I like that. Good kill!

Good kill, but I feel you are running into the same thing Tundra is running into around here, a bunch of ****ty LS1 drivers. A kill is a kill. I've raced Tundra probably over a dozen times and lost only 1 or 2 times. From a dead stop, it's a damn close race for a stock LS1. Tundra and I have only gone from a roll a few times and I don't think it's ever been much of a race. Everyone knows the L's weak spot is from a roll. My guess it maybe the guy was in the wrong gear. But either way, good kill. Sooner or later you'll run into someone who can drive their car and give you a run for your money.

Frank: Excellent smash!

Since I dropped all my performance magazine subs. a few yrs. ago, I can't tell the LT1s from the LS1s. I still don't have a 'street' kill but have spanked (and been spanked once or twice) a few at the track.

And, do you hang around Atlanta, or are you in the 'real' ga.?

Sorry Cliff but he was a great driver. Never once saw his car studder as though he was a slow shifter. I have no idea if you can get an auto in an SS or not. Now that I look back though we must have been pushing 70 or 75 before it was over with. Like I've always thought, these trucks are underrated to be able to run with a 3800 pound camaro. My SOTP meter tells me around 410-420 hp out of a stock L. That would be more in order for a STOCK L with a full tank of premium. He did have a female friend with him. He probably told her "another win for the SS", NOT.

Lightninrod: Yeah I live in the "real" GA. Up near gainesville. Hope to see ya at the varsity on Sat. I plan on being there.....

SO now I'm hungry for one of those chili dogs, an FO, and a fried apple pie...used to frequent the Varsity in ATL in my college days...

Oh and great kill, BTW. I JUST BARELY took an SS about 6 months ago on the freeway. It might have been that we were already rolling around 60 when it started, and he was on my door through 110 or so and we both let off...he would have walked away from me if it had continued I'm sure.

A good kill is a good kill. I still have a hard time believing you beat an SS. I'm not making excuses for the SS because I don't know him. All I can go by is my experience here in Oklahoma. Summer weather my L will not come close to beating my T/A WS6. which is the same motor as the SS. ASUTFord Boy ran his stock L at 13.4 but he never said what time of year he ran this time. All the L's here this summer (99,00,01's) are running right at 14 second in the 1/4 mile and the LT1 are running mid to low 14 teens and the LS1 are running mid to high 13 teens. I understand each part of the country the L's are running different times due to temperature etc, but again this is my personal experience. No flames!!!

Cliff: The 2001 Ls are almost half a sec quicker stock for stock in the 1/4 than the 99/00 models. Not flaming just facts. Couldnt believe it myself when i started catching him. I stress the word "slowly" as in the first post. Thought about a chipnfilter but will pass on that now.

Yes, they do offer the SS in an auto. May be what you ran against. Don't know anything about how the auto downshifts in the SS, so I guess if you caught him after his sweet spot and it didn't downshift, then it's anyone's game. I know Tundra's only loss so far against a C5 vette was too an auto.

BTW, is everyone seeing .5 quicker in 1/4 mile with the o1 L's?? Tundra and I raced one a few times and we both beat it. The guy didn't seem to be too happy about losing to a '99 L, oh well.

I don't believe that the 01's are .5 quicker stock for stock. I haven't seen this to be true, at least here in So Cal. I'm sure there are exceptional trucks out there, but not on average...
