00 lightning vs 4r70w
00 lightning vs 4r70w
i found a stock 00 lightning engine for 2500 with 54k miles will it kill my 4r70w tranny? is it a fair price? i am looking to drop it in a 97 f150 4.6l 4x4. my main purpose is for towing i have other go fast toys but one more never hurts
Trust me i would rather have a powerstroke but don't have those kind of funds.

Thanks Phil!
I found the formula that JMC posted (thanks JMC!) for the torque output figuring 440ftlbs engine 1.9 for the converter * 90% = 752.4ftlbs 4r70 being good for 700ftlbs
crap tranny was just rebuilt 40k.
better to strengthen the 4r70 or fit in a 4r100 i have 4x4?
The engine comes with the harness but no ecu. is that a problem to locate or get a 5.4 ecu and a tuner?

Thanks Patman03sprcrw.
good point.
the 4r70 would not operate correctly with the ligthning pcm. is there alot of custom work to switch out to the 4r100? it is 4x4 as well
trying to work it all out on paper before the stupidly opening the limited wallet trick.

You don't need to change the pcm if you keep the 4r70. You can tune it to run the L motor.
If you put the 4r100 in ,,yes you will need the L pcm to operate it.
As long as your not going to beat on the truck and race it you should be ok with a built 4r70 with the L motor at stock HP. But find someone that is known for building great transmissions!
Now I tried to keep my 4r70. When I had it built ,they turned it into a 2WD trans. I eliminated the 4X4,took out the front dif and T case. My problem is I was making way more then stock HP and I run the **** out of my truck. My truck is 6000#s. I went through 3 race built 4r70s in 3 years!!
Got tired of spending 3K a shot so decided I would be better off with a 4R100. It was not a fun swap and very expensive but I had no choice.
I spent 5K on the tranny and 3K on parts and labor.
It's going to be even more involved trying to do it to your 4X4. I'm not even sure it's doable. The T case will have to be in a totally different position. You'll have to fab some kind of mounting hardware and it may not fit ware it needs to go.
In my truck I had to have the 4r100 trans, dip stick, dipstick tube and bracket, flex plate, torque converter, cross member, trans wire harness, dash wire harness,L pcm. The driveshaft had to be shortened and the exhaust changed to fit around the 4r100.
Whatever way you go you will need the pcm for that tranny.

It could be done on 4x4 but you'd have to shorten the rear and lengthen the front driveshafts, as well as a new crossmember for the Tcase

would all of this still work the same with an 03 L motor? found one for about the same money. and i was reading about plugs blowing on the vin L motors

Yes all the same.
03 will have a little more power and has the newer inter-cooler with updated intake manifold.
Depending on what time in the year it was put together it might even have the updated heads with more spark plug threads.

These are pics they sent me of the 03 L motor.
Can you tell me if its missing many pieces and if so possible expense or if you would go for this motor (48k) 3200 shipped.
i noticed on the left V cover it said 08/31/98? possibly replaced v cover?
