Question 2003 Ford Lightning SVT (Good Buy?)

I currently own a 2006 Ford Ranger 4x4... I am selling it to pay my dad back 1.5k I owe him... But I am questioning buying a 2003 SVT Lightning in replacement... I love going to the drag strip with my ranger but it just doesn't cut it... I have heard this runs 13.9's stock? What are some good mods I could do when I potentially buy this truck? I was thinking all new intake (Cold Air Intake, Throttle Body, Intake Manifold), exhaust, and possibly headers. Feedback please, Thanks

Might be the best idea to get an older Ranger if you have to sell a truck to pay off a debt.

well, Its only 1.5k I have to pay back and the Ranger is worth 18k... so I am currently dealing with a dealer I might buy the 03 SVT Lightning for around 15k and then trade them my truck in the same deal, that way i get a truck and some cash to pay back my dad... well see

I want a Lightning as much as you do, I'm just saying there may be a better way to get $1500 rather then trading in a truck for another one. Can your Dad work with you on this? Do you have a job? Just like a life lesson.

I can work with my dad, I owe him 3,000 but he says if i get 1,500 he will respect that... And im not trading the ranger for lightning just to get money, I really want a lightning cause there fast stock trucks, the only downside it bad mpg and filling with 91 octane... and my dad does not like the idea of a lightning because it is single cab... =/ well see

sounds like it's time to cut the apron strings son and learn to be a man

wah wah wah 92 octane wah wah wah, it's like what $5 more a tank if that $5 breaks your budget maybe you need to keep the ranger

sure lightnings can get bad mileage but that's if you drive it like you stole it all the time, if you drive it decently you'll get decent mileage

you also need to consider the Lightnings history and what mods it has now before you try to add mods to it...

oh and by the way, I'd get the Lighting

I think it is best for you to keep the Ranger and get a job.

Glad you have a job. I should not have assumed just because you were $3000 in debt to your dad before he forgave half of it. I'm just suggesting to keep the Ranger till your debt is paid off or a little after. Just as a life lesson to live within your means. I have learned to live within my means the hard way some days... nothing terrible though. Just trying to give you some advice from what I have learned. Do whatever you want, just keep that in mind.

I have to agree. A lightning is the last car you want to buy if your strapped for cash. I mean no disrespect but I feel that you may not be ready for it. Maybe you could get an older car until your done with school and more financially sound. We have all been there more or less. It is unbelievably cool of your father to work out that kind of deal. 15k is a very expensive car for someone not working full time. If you spit a plug or blow the tranny you are talking big money to fix and these are common problems. When you have a truck that ways 5000#(or whatever) with that much power stuff will break. And its not cheap. Tranny goes out 3k.This is just my opinion. I am not lecturing you or trying to play parent. I know you are not going to listen to any of us anyway as most guys of your age want something now, damn the consequences. I know I was.

To answer you question yes an 03 lightning is an awesome ride and I think my 12 year old sister could drive it to a faster time than a 13.9 stock. You could probably pick up a used stang or camaro or whatever and be faster than a stock lightning for a 1/4 of the price and much cheaper to fix. Good luck on whatever you decide. And treat pops right. Just because he is willing to eat half the debt doesnt mean he should. It would say a lot of your character to pay back the full 3 regardless.
