ok i need help trans is acting bonkers

ok so here is what happened. the other day i was leaving the mall and decided to get on the throttle in first gear just for a little burnout, truck then shifted into 2nd and then immediatley shifted back into 1st and then i let off the gas and tried to drive again and it shifted back into second and right back to first. Transmission will not even shift into 3rd. I believe this truck has an aftermarket VB put not positive (im just basing that on the the fact that it shifts hard in low rpms). I drove the truck home with the trans in 2nd gear the whole way and had no problems. Got home and checked the fluid and it was very low, i put more fluid in and ran the truck multiple times and it got no better, im thinking i fried a clutch or something, any thoughts? im stuck and this sucks lol i cant drive my truck.

where are you located?

I'm not sure, but that sounds a little similar to the 2 FTVB's that went bad on me.

good luck

hopefully a more educated person will jump in and help out

i live in north jersey, i know what a VB is but what is the 2 FTVB sorry dont know all the abbreviations just yet. someone on lightning rodder said something about it being the gear selector which makes sense bc the shifter on the dash is real loose, so loose that as far as it will let me shift is 2nd gear and i cannot get to first

North Jersey? I live in East Rutherford area. I have a fully built DMP trans that is the same Dante is running in his race truck. It has 3,000 miles on it and it is for sale with a PI 3,000 stall converter. I am going with a TH400 chevy trans do to me building a race truck for the 8s. Before going out and buying a new transmission or valve body try the following

**Always set the parking brake and block the tires before playing with the trans !!**

1) check the two Torx bolts at the end of the shift tube under the dash. If the bolts are loose when you put the lever in gear you aren't fully pulling the cable to fully engage the selected gear in the tranny. If these get really loose you won't be able to start the truck sometimes without lifting up slightly on the shift lever.

2) Check that there is no slop in the selector on the driver side of the transmission, it is easy to find because the shift cable is attached to it, make sure the plug and contacts are not corroded.

Good luck,

Ian

ok the screws under the dash are not lose but the little cable that pulls the whole shifting unit cannot pull any further when in second gear. Gear selector on the trans is off just a hair, and how do i adjust it?

Can you put the shift lever in all posistions? such as P-N-R-D-2-1 ?

As for the orange needle being a tiny bit off, well it's a Ford and that is quite common.

As for a defective valve body, it is possible, but not probable, have you rechecked the trans fluid level when fully warmed up and the engine running? Too much fluid can cause just as many problems as too little fluid.

its moves to all positions but when it looks like it is in first its not, it is still in second and there isnt to much fluid i have checked repeatedly,so you dont think its the vb's huh

It looks like it is showing signs of internal failure. Have you ever had the transmission out of the truck for you to have any issues pertaining to this?

A VB is a very simple thing, but if you are not seeing near the hot fill line on the dip stick when warmed up, then you should add some more fluid (Dexron/Mercon III). If that does not help it may be time to bring it to a professional.
