I believe Mercon V is the what should be used, and I also believe Mobil 1 states not compatible with Mercon.

But I could be wrong.

My owners manual says to use Mercon. I have been runing Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF since 1K miles. Here is a link to the product data sheet for it: http://dallnd6.dal.mobil.com/GIS/Mob...b?OpenDocument

Hope this helps

It says what to use right on the handle of the dipstick. It will say MERCON....don't use mercon V. Also there is a plug on the torque convertor that you can remove so that most of the tranny fluid is drained. Hope this helps...

DO not use anything but Mercon III, I personally do not use anything expensive for the tranny, and I run a pan that is 5 qts. larger than stock.
I simply use HAVOLINE, and change the Trans fluid every other engine oil change.

Why does the Lightning FAQ referred to by this site say the Lightning uses Mercon V, when the correct transmission fluid is Mercon. Using the wrong type of fluid will ruin the transmission, right?

Seems like a very large and potentially costly error in the FAQ, that should be corrected ASAP.

I've talked to someone who is intimately familiar with these transmissions and here's his explaination to why someone have found Mercon V fluid when they sent in tranny fluid to be analyzed:

"The correct fluid is Mercon. At the factory we use "H oil" which is a special break in oil not available commercially. At the factory, we also build the 4R70, which gets "B oil" the equivalent of H oil for Mercon V, and there is a tolerance for the two being mixed in the transfer system, (we get it by the railcar, and sometimes the two get cross contaminated). Anyhow, it is possible that some Mercon V could be in a 4R100, and up to the given spec that's okay, but the service fluid is definitely Mercon, and Mercon V should not be used."

I looked in the SVT owners supplumental booklet and it says in big BOLD type do not mix Mercon and Mercon V fluids. Don't know where I thought of Merc V from. Anyway I will either go with Ford Merc. or Mobil 1 ATF. Since I will change it regular I may opt for the cheaper Ford Merc. Talked to JL yesterday and he says that he runs synthetic in the motor and rear diff but not in the trans...

Just got to your local JiffyLube or similar place and have them fill it w/ their machine that transfers the old out and the new in.

Take your Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF w/ you and tell them to use that.

SOMEONE posted on here before the upgrade I do believe and now it's lost. Who was that? You stated you had to bring a few extra quarts with you?
