Exclamation Factory Airbox!

I currently have a JDM chip (TST2 E25) JDM filter kit and a modified factory airbox. I have done some real time comparisons with both filters. Since the weather is so hot here in TX, the JDM filter kit takes in to much engine heat. So I opted to use and modify the factory airbox. What I did is cut a 4" hole in the bottom of the airbox closest to the engine. I then connected a 4" tube to this hole and ran it straight down between the lower radiator hose and the front core support out thru the fender cover in front of the tire. I then extended that tube to the front of the lower grill from the back side. So if you look past between the front tire and fender opening you can see the 4" tube hanging down. I also was able to do some real-time data comparisons between the two. Here are the numbers, decide for your self. Both test were done within an hour time frame.

OUTSIDE AIR TEMP/Humid= 95 degrees/99% humidity at 2:00PM

First JDM Airfilter kit:
Flow Meter Data: From 80MPH to WOT capturing data at 120MPH= 45lbs/min
Intake Air Temp: Steady Cruise at 80MPH= 130 +/- 3 degrees

Second Modified Factory Airbox:
Flow Meter Data: From 80MPH to WOT capturing data at 120MPH= 43lbs/min
Intake Air Temp: Steady Cruise at 80MPH= 100 +/- 2 degrees

Thats why you do one of these custom RTKILLA pipes and get the best of both worlds.

RTKILLA:

They should call you RTSTREETCLEANER....Lol. For the amount of driving I do that filter would be filthy. I wouldn't drive like that in the rain either.

2001Bolt:

What did you use to measure the mass air flow? Was this with some OBDII reader? Did you happen to measure the stock unmodified box?

351stang,
Yes, I have an ODBII Scanner. No, I did not get any data from the UNmodified airbox. But, after the modification, the whine of the supercharger sounds loud the same as with an aftermarket airfilter kit!!! So I know it was a major improvment!

Matt - Found the same results as you. I only run the open filter during the winter months when the air is cooler.

Cool

I've always said that the stock airbox (modified) works as good or better than a cone filter but nobody wanted to hear it. Now that there is some hard data maybe people will listen.

I had to lose mine for the 90mm MAF but if I could find a 2001 box cheap it would be on there in a heartbeat.

I am running about 8 degrees over air temp on the highway. 25 degrees over in traffic. Does anyone know of a way to block off hot air from getting to the fender air inlets?

I checked out Chucks Lightning Page a couple of months ago when I first got my truck, I modifed my airbox close to what Chuck did, with a K&N flat filter and a 5"by6" square hole in the end of the box closest to the engine. Big difference in the sound of my supercharger and my ET times! Thanks Chuck!

With those that have an open filter element, cant you just take off the plastic shrowd that covers the front part of the engine bay. The air will come right through the grill, bathing the filter with cooler air.

Mine can be closed for bad weather if needed.
