Rear window emergency!
Greetings all,
My L was broken into last night (2nd time in 10 days, I'm pretty pleased with that) and the charming individual gained access by smashing the center rear slider window with a rock or brick.
My current conundrum is replacing the window. My inclination is to spend the extra $ for the factory window (Quotes are around $350.) However, the glass co's are also quoting for aftermarket windows in the $250 range. Thoughts?
As well an option would be to install an electric slider; is there a preferred vendor for such a beast? Are they worth it?
If you're wondering, theystole my cellphone handsfree thingy, my V1, and my darts. I'm most pissed about the darts.
Oh, yeah, the rock or whatever it was obviously hit the console and steering wheel, as both have gouges in them... Can those be ordered from one of the online Ford Parts suppliers? Do I need exact part #'s?
For that matter, how difficult is it to replace the sliding window? Should I just order a replacement and jam it in there?
Thanks in advance,
-Jim

Bummer about what happened. I'd replace it with the stock window.
BTW, did they steal your flights also? I used to trade flights with people I met and I've got some cool ones. Losing the darts sucks too, especially after you've gotten used to the weight and balance.

Jim:
If my memory serves me correctly, there are thin spacers/guides on the top and bottom of the slider. If you gently pull them out, the slider will lift out.
Just a thought. Why not replace it with a solid rear window? Never use the slider in mine. Graphics would be easier...

Oh, yeah they took the flights as well. I hadn't thought of that, really.
The solid rear window idea is a pretty good one; might look better.. Hmmm...

Sorry to hear about your truck, I would go with the OEM window either way. In the future try not to leave things out, put them in the console if you have one or the glove box. The fact that they only took your cell adapter, V1, darts, and your flights suggests thats what prompted them to break into your truck, especially since they left the stereo and airbags. If the other items were not visible they may have passed you by. Just a thought.

I bought a CR Lawrence rear slider before for another truck and it was not as good as stock. Very stiff to use and leaked and rusted on the edges. Man set up a camera on a motion switch or something. Since school is out crime has gone up. There were kids shooting out windows with BB guns over the weekend. My L sits inside thankfully! Anyway a neighboor and I sat on the dark porch all night with my 8 year old K-9 100lb German Shepherd that is fully trained in German commands, retiered due to hip problems. We waited two nights and saw them walking down the middle of street doing their thing to random cars laughing. We announced our presence and they tried to run until they heard the K-9 in pursuit. They laid out quickly after that. The cops liked the way we caught them
The short of it is they were spending the night at one boys house sneaking out at night. All the damage was in the subdivision they lived in which is dumb (all new homes 5yrs or less). Ages 13-15 all boys, 21 cars hit 30 windows shot out, nothing ever stolen! Their parents were not as upset as I thought they should be. It is well worth lost sleep to catch those bastards! Don't be an easy target get an alarm, a dog, lighting, move the vevicle. From the repeat strikes I would say it someone local. What did they take the first time? The V1 will stand out in Pawn shops I have never seen one there. Good Luck!

I replaced my slider with an all window with no slider. I have a perfectly good slider window I would be willing to sell for $100 plus shipping. Send me an e-mail at terpeg@mindspring.com if you are interested.
Thanks, folks! If only I had more time. It's rained once today already, and of course, I have no garage, so I have to get it replaced today. Nothing like having to make a purchase decision based on timing.
There is a guy on his way out to my office to replace the window with a Ford replacement slider. It'll be back the way it was, and I'll be lighter in the wallet for my troubles. Oh, well.
Thanks a ton for the input here, and I tell you if I had a few days to park this thing in a locked garage, I would happily purchase a window from one of the folks have emailed me...
